The lines on either side of the note head are part of the note; kind of like the stem. The sharp goes in front of the note.

You're still going to need an amplifier, a two channel (two output) amplifier. Run the Left output to one channel, and the Right to the other. Place. If you have separate speaker enclosures place them about six feet apart, or the stereo image will be too pronounced.

The "instrument" both transmits and recognizes velocity. The amount of change you can perceive in a voice might be limited by that voice. If you use the "portable grand" feature, it should be most distinct; however a sound like "Brass Section" (Voice #047) may use limited or no velocity curves...
You're right, it is a good deal for you. Yamaha makes very consistent instruments. It may not be an ideal instrument, but it will be solid, and predictable. It should be great for a beginner.
