Its actually an pretty easy job. Yes you will need to remove the tank. It helps if its empty or low on fuel.
If you need a diagram for this you probably should not be attempting it at all.

im not an expert but i drive a 97 yukon, same as your suburban and i have been thru that engine a million times. I think your problem might be your fuel plenum. this would also cause misfires. Do you have a check engine light on? is it a 5.7 or a 5.3?
