Was it running before you put the plugs & wires in it? If yes then you did something wrong pls. recheck the wiring. If it was not running then check that you do have spark, fuel, compression & the timing is right (you might have skipped time).

Do you have a lot of miles?
Check that it is timed correctly as too slow means less mileage.
How about your catalytic converter & the rest of the exhaust system?
Any smell of gas outside the car?
I assume you do not drive like a "Wild Man" with crazy takeoffs.
Check your plug wires also.
Try changing the plugs to a slightly hotter ones (the part man will tell you which ones to get) bring your old ones with you. If this doesn't help then you are looking at having to overhaul the motor.
You can still drive it for a long time.

The engine light could be on for any number of things. It is best to put it on a scanner to find out exactly what is wrong.
Some auto parts stores will do this for free, just call & ask first.
