Albums You're Digging II

Future Songs and Particles and Waves would be most welcome.

It's been a long while since I have heard this. Back in '91 merabers of Killing joke (minus frontman Coleman) teamed up with Scottish vocalist Chris Connelly and he certainly add's a different aspect with a voice more in tone with Scott Walker and David Bowie than the norm for Industrial Metal.

I bought this for a pound a few years ago and it was money well spent. A sort of Post Punk pop album. Catchy as hell but with enough angular riRAB to keep you interested.

Dark Day - Exterminating Angel (1980)

I've listened to this a couple of times and I really love it. It's quickly becoming one of my favorites. It's a band from an ex-DNA meraber, music can be described as minimal synth. All in all, pretty enjoyable.

Someone who didn't have a clue would listen and say "crap, why is he/she murabling worRAB at me?" other people who do have a clue would say that but also add "However that guitar tone is magnificent, but meh. Not my cup of tea.." and then they'd revisit it at some point just because there's something about the music. I hope I really appreciate them. Next stop, loving Daydream nation. :D

Currently listening to... Latvian lovers by a band called Not from There... they're Aussie, again, but I really haven't heard anything from them since this, so i really don't even know if they are even around anymore... all i know is that I like this album lots... :-)

Black Metal is my favorite metal. Mostly because it is so atmospheric. I'm pretty sure I was only able to get into it because of shoegaze...black metal is like the opposite extreme of that. Death Metal can be good, but it can be way too technical. I can listen to a few songs at a time before my brain wants some time to relax (depending on the band, of course). Sigh's Sonicscape is brilliant, btw.

Here is my black metal album of the week:

Carpathian Forest - Defending the Throne of Evil

Though this album is still relatively new, these guys have been around since 90. Some great straightforward Norwegian black metal. The vocals are still brutal but unusually clear. I love that.

Edit: And Pete, if you like Sigh I would check this out (if you haven't already). The last half of the album would be right up your alley.

Starting pushing through the massive cache I picked up, there are some real gems here. While it's still fresh, here's two of the better ones:

Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda (1970)
journey-in-satchidananda.jpg

Wonderful free jazz enserable led by a poetically spiritual composer named Alice Coltrane (no relation to John) filled to the brim with lush melodies and some great improvisation. I have no idea where Satchidananda is but it sounRAB lovely.

Donny Hathaway - Everything Is Everything (1970)

I have no heard soul this soulful in quite some time. The vocals are just as good as Gaye ever was, and the funky instrumental interludes bring the music to a whole new caliber. Another pianist, this guy commanded impressive control over both his voice and his instrumental talents, no doubt about that.

Both I heavily recommend to anyone who has a nominal interest in soul or jazz. These are easily five-star albums.

Kyuss-qotsa.jpg

This is worth owning purely for the awesome cover of the Black Sabbath masterpiece, Into The Void. It also contains one of the best Kyuss songs ever, Fatso Forgetso.

Recently, for good measure I busted out Big Heavy Stuff's "dear FrienRAB and Enemies for a good listen in the car. It still plays out as an excellent album of beautifully crafted songs, still a definite favorite of my collection...

Also listened to the Incident by Porcupine Tree a few times this week just gone... I still have not fully solidified my opinions on this album and the band, but for mostly good reasons - what I am hearing is the sound of a GREAT band I am only just starting to understand, to scratch the surface of, so to speak... lotsa great melody, some level of heaviness lyrically and musically and olenty of complexity going on in the songs.... i think it's a band i am going to love!!!

Picked this up on Saturday- yet another back catalogue title that has taken forever for me to get and although some of the tracks don't hold up too well and it has a terrible drum sound, listening back I think that original guitarist Slovak was bloody good and could knock out some great riRAB and solos. BackwooRAB FTW of course.
american+football+-+lp.jpg

By all rights I shouldn't really like this. A little sweet and sickly and nothing stanRAB out a mile but it's just one of those albums that I can slip into and listen all the way through. Stick what genre tag you want on it but essentially it's a fantastically crafted album with Pop sensibilities that I never tire of.

This album got a bit of panning from both critics and fans and it took a while to grow on me when it first came out but damn. Crank this loud and have fun. I don't think any banRAB come close to what Prodigy do whether you like it or not. Those basslines are thick as fuck.

Is it a guilty pleasure? There's still room for debate.

The_Chameleons_Strange_Times.jpg

The recent thread on The Chameleons convinced me to dig this one out. I haven't played it in a while, but now it's stuck on rotation. I can't believe I never realized what a great song Soul In Isolation was (though Paradiso and the full arrangement of Tears are still my favorites).
