If you like your zombie films (or even if you like a good laugh) I'd definitely recommend it. Really exceeded my expectations. I went to a preview and wrote a few thoughts about it, if you want a look. Contains light spoilers, nothing too much - the film includes a fantastic cameo that I won't mention, try and avoid any mention of it because the surprise is brilliant!
Just saw it today. Very funny. It's definitely more of a comedy than a horror movie. It's not a complete farce though, there are some moments of real emotion. It's not particularly scary most of the time, but there is some tension in the final act.
I was trying to avoid the cameo spoiler but checked out the listings for the cinema and they had the 'cameo' in the cast list for the film, yeah it's the cast list but they only added two names plus the cameo anyway !!!
Watched this recently and loved it,very funny and pretty violent, woodys search for the twinkies was funny lol only thing that bothered me was the amusment park, theres no way u would go there in the event of a zombie takeover they should have know the lights and noise would attract unwanted attention.
Just been to the movies to watch this, freaking amazing! Loved it becuase it gets away from all the clique's of zombie movies.
Just a nice wee film with everyone's fav zombies! Loved the celeb cameo, won't spoil it for others, but the whole cinema were killing themselves laughing!
Really really good, was sooo funny i was laughing my head of from start to finish. Wasn't the best film as in storylines etc but i think it was hilariously funny.
Agreed.
Well-made zombie comedies existed before Shaun.
Brain Dead and Return of the Living Dead for example.
Zombieland is entertaining in its own right and, like Shaun, makes sure it has likeable characters at its heart.
Just got back from watching this and thought it was a very good blend of humour and gory zombie deaths, reminded me of the excellent Dead Rising game on the XBox 360. Perhaps could've done with less of the schmaltzy romance in the middle and a bit more screen time for the cameo but still one of the most enjoyable trips to the cinema I've had this year so 8/10
And I hope everyone remembered to hang around till the end of the credits
Arghhhh I knew it, we stayed for ages at the end and then the cleaner came in so we presumed there was nothing after the credits !!! can you say what it was in spoilers or something ???
Weeeell... it's an entertaining film, but it's ultimately just fluff. Part of the problem is the
crowbarred-in relationship between Columbus and Witchita.
I felt the film would've been improved if they'd have ditched that in favour of either more character development or a tighter main plot.
Could also have done with the removal of the sudden-loud-noise moments. It's not big or clever, it's just slightly unpleasant - especially in what is probably best classed as a slightly misfiring dark comedy.
Edit: to elaborate, I felt the concept was a good one - a geeky and somewhat socially inept young guy surviving the apocalypse. The opening of the film was where the film was at its strongest, as was the idea of the list of rules for surviving such an event.
Unfortunately, it seemed to lose heart in itself about midway through, at about the point that
Columbus finRAB his hometown has been destroyed.
From then on, it devolves into a very standard and poorly executed
love story,
which the script really fails to sell.
It's difficult to condemn with enthusiasm because the film is quite joyful in using cliches like unlimited ammunition and overused zombie death scenarios and it really does want to involve the audience in having fun, which is generally what the characters do on-screen. It also keeps the plot moving apart from those set in a certain comic actor's house. There the script problems really come into their own and I found my attention wandering during the fairly trite and ultimately dull dialogue.
Dialogue's a pretty major flaw throughout the film, and it's apparent that much thought hasn't been given to how the characters talk. Tennesse, the macho cowboy, at one point describes something as "epic" in the sense used by World of Warcraft players and teenagers, and it's just one example of the speech not ringing true.
In summary, really, it gets in trouble when the otherwise unrelenting flow of action stops, but thankfully for most of the film the valve is left wide open so there's only the aforementioned stagnation at the house.
If you're at the cinema you could do worse than seeing Zombieland, but it's not really worth a visit especially.
