Zombie Flesh Eaters Uncut At Last

Unless you bought it from outside the UK or shelled out for the Box of the Banned 4 years ago you might want to get the first proper release of Lucio Fulci's classic zombie film when it appears in October.

Why its taken 4 years since it was passed uncut I dont know.

Unfortunately its another boxset with ZFE Parts 2 and 3 which are actually nothing of the kind and have no connection to the classic original at all.

Also in the set is Zombie Holocaust - rather surprisingly passed uncut many years ago after years of butchered VHS releases and this also stars Ian McCulloch.

Shame ZFE was not selected as the first Fulci on Bluray instead of New York Ripper

i know they aren't particularly good films but some of these italian zombie films leave you feeling really unnerved and despairing - surely the sign of a good horror film

A good horror film doesn't have terrible acting, rotten dubbing, joke shop fx or a moronic plot.
The thought of watching any Fulci/Argento movie would make anyone with an IQ above room temperature despair.:)

Then you have the cut version.

The reason they are not around is because they were a cheapjack outfit releasing notorious films bought by unsuspecting buyers ignorant of the films history and not realising that the films were nearly all cut .

And the ones that were not cut were spoilt by crap quality prints

2 Vipco faves were House on the Edge of the Park and Island of Death - and both cut by between 10 and 15 minutes each.

They were first to release The Incredible Melting Man but the master appeared to be the same one Columbia used for the 80's VHS release.

Nearly all their films are available in better quality uncut versions elsewhere.

The one worthwhile release they did do was the Amicus film Vault of Horror which they actually managed to release uncut .
Its still the only uncut dvd of the film - shame the print is the usual rubbish quality - but the dvd is worth a bit now unlike the rest of their catalogue which is still ripping people off in Poundland

For their time the Fulci zombie films were excellent and many of them still remain excellent to this day.

The director cannot be blamed for the dubbing, and if the actors are dubbed you cannot possibly judge their performances properly
The FX were convincing enough to remain censored in the UK for over 20 years.

The plots are basic and in places nonsense but Fulci's zombie films are all imagery and atmosphere

Imagery and atmosphere? Give me a break. That's like saying a film is beautifully shot because it's kinder than saying it's really boring.
The House by the Cemetery is the reason fast forward was invented and Zombie Flesh Eaters is a load of rubbish (unless you like pleasuring yourself over images of mutilation).
In all honesty I don't see any merit in Italian gorefest movies at all.
I have nothing against zombie movies (REC, 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead, Dead & Buried etc.) or even gore (I still shudder at the memory of Martyrs), it's just third rate film-making I object to.

You have your opinion and you are entitled to it.

I like Fulcis zombie movies and a few of his others and while the dubbing certainly does not help the rest of the content makes up for it.

One wonders if you've ever seen HBTC uncut as its a slower more atmospheric film than the rest and its only recently (maybe even this year) that the UK has been permitted to see the full version.

The murders were cut to bits in the UK making them appear very badly edited and shot.

Maybe you saw the Elephant Video version released at the height of the video nasties scare with about 10 minutes cut out

I saw the one on Film 4 from a few months ago (or at least as much of it as I could stand). Perhaps I've seen too many movies and lived too long but it was truly feeble.
I should add that I've nothing against bad movies per se (Rawhead Rex is one of my guilty pleasures) but sadistic Italian gorehounRAB leave me totally unmoved.
The Italians do make top notch porn though: I'm convinced you can pay Italian actresses to do pretty much anything.

I think I recall seeing it listed on Film4 shortly after its first uncut release was announced so it should have been the full version.

But I dont have as much faith in Film4 as I did when they first started as they sometimes dont show films in the correct ratio (Monte Carlo Or Bust) , shows films in censored form (Vault of Horror - until last year when it was restored) ,and when they showed the Dario Argento films they went for subtitled Italian versions over English ones , even for films made with some on set dialogue recorded in English

Film 4 also crashes into ad breaks with no attempt to preserve the flow of the movie, just like ITV 4 etc. It was much better when it was subscription only.

Surely even in their uncut forms, these films are well past their sell by date.

It just seems somewhat incongruous to finally have the uncut versions after all these years, when you realise just how fake and indeed tame that late 70's gore now looks - and frankly I think this is the reason why they are now being released uncut, because the censors realise they have lost their ability to shock and disgust people the way they once did.

KiRAB would probably laugh at the sort of gore in display in these sorts of movies.

I would value Argento's output more in this regard, but while he was a very stylish and inventive director, the blood and gore in his movies now dates them terribly.

Argento really should have stopped with Opera in 1987.
His films get worse with each movie and Do You Like Hitchcock was appalling but Mother Of Tears was not only a dreadful film it was pretty much an insult to the first 2 films in the series.

He neeRAB to retire

I waited YEARS to see this, and like most video "nasties"-WHAT a disappointment.
I never switch films off as a rule, but I couldn't take anymore.
I managed up to where the underwater zombie tries to take a bite out of a shark (for some reason), and could take no more.
What a load of cheap, third-rate b*llocks.
..and anyone who claims that this bottom of the barrel sh*te is art, is just being pretentious!:(

Romeros Dawn Of the Dead-now THERE'S a zombie film!:)

*Texas Chainsaw Massacre was AWFUL too-so bad in fact, my Brother was in genuine hysterics at the running-around --in -a -circle -in -the -middle -of -the -road finale.:D

Woah boy (or girl) trying to tell me Suspiria and Profondo Rosso are for numpties? In fact, critics at Total Film (not so elitist as Empire mag) named Suspiria as the 3rd greatest horror film ever made.

Rawhead Rex wasn't too bad, but had nothing on Barker's original short story.

Well, opinions obviously vary, but I can't help thinking your brother kind of missed the point about the type of film TCM is. It is not an out and out horrorfilm, in fact there is hardly any blood spilled. It's more of a psychological thriller. Leatherface was what we call mentally challenged today, not a psycho slashing killer. His round and round swinging the chainsaw was part of his child like behaviour.

Damn! Outed as an Empire reader!
Suspiria is amateurish, horrible (as in garish) to look at, noisy, has a truly dreadful soundtrack and is about as scary as a school play. Italian horror movies are the equivalent of British gangster movies: just the thought of them makes my heart sink. I haven't seen Deep Red but I think I can find the strength to go on without ever doing so.

I think Rawhead deserves another outing with more than one decent actor in the cast and budget of more than

IronJade. That made me laugh, I like it, although by that logic, the classic series of Doctor Who would have been put to bed after the first episode.

I would never have you down as some elitist film snob. I also read Empire, but I prefer Total Film because it doesn't have that "this is what I should watch" air about it.

A quick confession and apologies are forthcoming. I am not a fan of Argento by any stretch of the imagination. Just wanted to point out in a pseudo pompous manner that you are wrong (I don't agree with that statement) and it was just a bit of fun.

It does seem like you tend to go against the grain somewhat regarding British gangster films. The Long Good Friday for instance or are you referring to the Mockney stuff which, isn't meant to be taken seriously anyway.
