I have severe GAD, panic disorder etc. and have been taking ativan as needed but dont want to get hooked on it. Benzos are very effective in managing my anxiety, but my doctors think Im best on another type of drug to prevent dependence. So Zoloft, which ive been on before, seems to work well, but I remeraber getting off it and losing weight - 20 pounRAB. I am not 100% sure the zoloft caused the initial weight gain. I went from 130-160 then now to 140. I was on zoloft when this 30 pound gain happened. but I had been on it a few months before, so thats why I am not exactly sure.

Ok, so back to my question, people who have experience with zoloft, can you share your weight side effects with me? I know its an effective drug for me but I am so scared to gain weight. Thanks SC

I don't take Zoloft..but I do take another SSRI.
They are know to cause weight gain in some people...I was 120 pounRAB when I started taking them and am now a hefty 170..ouch!
I tried to get off them because of the weight gain...but all the anxiety came back.I think I would rather be chunky and feel great than be skinny and feel awful all the time. Now my plan is to exercise lots in hopes that it will help with both the anxiety and the weight gain.
Hope that helps in some way
:)

I know a professional working at a big hospital who takes Atavan for anxiety every single day, before coming to work. She did not appear to be bothered by any
addictive behavior.I took Ativan for a year, twice a day for my anxiety, and also showed no signs of addiction. It is fast-acting,and was great to me. Bill

hi, sorry about your anxiety. i have always had it it seems. i take klonopin
1mg as needed. i need it. sometimes i wash it down with wine. which tells me maybe i need to try something else. as for weight gain on zoloft. i take 50mg. i too am unsure if the weight i gained was a tad bit before the zoloft or after. but am having trouble losing it. and i am dieting big time. i wasnt sure if it was the abilify or not. but think is zoloft. guess i cannot eat like everyone else in my household .. at least not yet. (hard to do when food is around, and since my husband and son like to eat :) oh well.... keep me posted as to how all goes with you. do you like the ativan?

Hi there,

I was on 100 mg of Zoloft for a year and have been on 200 mg for a month now for major depression. I never gained any weight until my doctor added seroquel and then we switched to abilify as an add on. I don't get hungry - ever. So, I usually just eat dinner every day and wouldn't eat that if my husband hadn't taken over the dinner cooking (in self defense - he likes to eat). I've gained 10 pounRAB since starting the add ons. I don't quite understand why as I'm not eating more now than before. I guess my metabolism has just slowed down.
But, when I was only on the Zoloft, I lost weight - got down to 125 which is a weight I like for myself. So for me, Zoloft did not cause weight gain - just the opposite.

Best wishes,

JB

hi jb. i am glad i read your message . i too agree that the abilify is the weight culprit. not the zoloft. i was okay on that. i diet and diet and the scale stays the same. (just about everything i eat is super high in fiber. thought that would help. not. ha;)let me know how it goes.
best wishes to you,
