Zelda - Eldin bridge question

I apparently didn't go here earlier on in the game and so I don't have the portal there. I tried warping the bridge back but since I don't have this portal Midna just tells me I need to try again. Hopefully there is some way to trigger an event so I can get the portal, does anyone know if there is?
 
you need to go to the other side of the bridge and fight some shadows there...then you'll be able to warp the bridge. Just walk thru hyrule.
 
Do I need to be in wolf form? I walked all over on the west side of it and only fought archers, and on the east side there's only the Goron youth
