Yuyu Hakusho's Impact on Bleach

I'm sure there has been recommendation or versus threaRAB concerning those two animes, but this thread is different, it showcases exactly how deep Yuyu Hakusho flows within Bleach's Plot and Formula, after reading the entire thread, I assure you you'll come to the conclusion that Taite Kubo (Bleach author) wouldn't have thought of making Bleach the way it is today if he hasn't seen Yuyu Hakusho. Before we start, I'd appreciate it if no one replies with something like "All Shounen Animes are influenced by previous Shounen Animes", we all know that fact already, I'm by no means stating that Bleach is the only series to borrow from previous Shounen Animes so heavilly, Naruto and One Piece are just as lacking in originality as Bleach is, I mention this fact cause I have a feeling Bleach fans would reply with something like "so is Naruto or One Piece, they borrow tons of stuff from DragonballZ", don't worry, we're all aware of that fact.

To get things started, Yusuke of Yuyu Hakusho acquires Spirit Detective powers in the early phases of the series, these powers enable him to hunt down apparations that show up from another plane (The Demon World), he's accompanied by a female soul reaper named Botan who informs him of the many requirments of being a spirit detective and the different types of Demons he must hunt down, at some point, Botan feels an urge to be around Yusuke more often so she gets a human body (equivelant to a Gigai) and dresses up as a normal school girl. Up until this point, the exact same steps take place in Bleach with Ichigo replacing Yusuke, Rukia replacing Botan and Hollows replacing Demons. After the first Arcs of both series, Yuyu Hakusho enters a Tournament Arc while Bleach enters the Soul Society Arc. (The only original Arc. in the entire series), but prior to that, Yusuke undergoes training with his mentor Genkai and Ichigo also trains with Urahara, if you've seen both Animes you'll notice the similarities.

After the Soul Society Arc, we have the long Bounto filler Arc, and once again it starts with a step by step similarity in events with Yuyu Hakusho's Chapter Black Saga, in both series we're introduced to a Trio of mysterious foes who invite our heroes to some unknown mansion and play tricks on them, only for the bad guys to turn out to be new allies sent by the hero's mentor (Genkai in YYH, Urahara in Bleach) to show the good guys that they might encounter strange foes and that they should be prepared, afterwarRAB we're introduced to the head villain in both YYH and Bleach, in YYH he's an unknown foe named Sensui who manipulates a group of people and is planning to forge a Tunnel between the Human and Demon World, the exact same thing occures in Bleach with the Head Villain Kariya (or rather the Sorry excuse for a Villain Kariya) wanting to build a tunnel between the Human and the Hollow World (Heuco Mondo). Later on, Yusuke and the gang are informed that there are different classes of demons, it is explained in the very same fashion as Hitsugaya's explanation about the Hollow stages, in both cases the explanation is concluded by stating that an S-Class Demon (highest rank of demon in yyh) and a Vasto Lorde (highest rank of Hollow in Bleach) is capable of mass destruction.

Near the end of both the Chapter Black arc in Yuyu Hakusho and the Bounto Arc in Bleach, our hero squares off against the main Villain, in Yuyu Hakusho, Yusuke realizes there is another presence living inside him, and that it has taken control of his body for a period of the fight (the same way Ichigo's hollow took control of him in his fight against Byakuya), Yusuke's inner Demon also prevents him from moving freely at some point in the fight, just as Ichigo's inner hollow made Ichigo pause for a brief moment. After both Arcs end, the new Arc has Yusuke pondering what to do as he keeps feeling the Demonic presence within him, the same with Ichigo being confused over the Hollow within him, afterwarRAB, Yusuke is acquainted with High ranked Demons who had there demonic powers sealed in order for them to pass through to the human world and not cause damage (in a similar fashion as to how Captain and Vice Captain class have their death god powers reduced upon arriving to the Human Plane), in YYH, the demons inform Yusuke of his origins, and how he's half demon and that he should come to their side because eventually he's not gonna be able to supress the demonic presence within him and that he might cause his frienRAB a lot of harm, the whole situation sounRAB too similar to what Hirako Shinji told Ichigo when they first met... And so Yusuke later on trains with the Demons in order to balance himself out, Ichigo also approaches the VaizarRAB and trains with them to gain control of his inner hollow.

To sum this up, notice this small sequence in plot:
- Yuyu Hakusho: Yusuke becomes a spirit detective and hunts down Demons, after many endeavours, it turns out he actually has a demonic part within him that got in the way of his later battles, after much instabilities, he's confronted by someone of his own kind (A Demon) who informs him of the rapid changes he's undergoing and that he should join him.
- Bleach: Ichigo becomes a Shinigami and hunts down Hollows, after many endeavours, it turns out he actually has a Hollow Part within him that got in the way of his later battles, after much instabilities, he's confronted by someone of his own kind (a Vaizard) who informs him of the rapid changes he's undergoing and that he should join them.

I realize it was a long thread, but it needed to be detailed in order to show how much Bleach literally borrows from Yuyu Hakusho, and again I remind hardcore Bleach fans that Bleach's rivals in terms of popularity (namely Naruto and One Piece) are just as guilty of ripping off from older Shounen series so don't take it personally ^^

For the beginning, I notice YYH-esque things in Bleach, cause they also both have enemies become frienRAB in them. But most if not ALL shonens do, Dragonballz had it with Piccolo and Vegeta. And YYH had it with Kurama and Hiei. But both are good animes (YYH and Bleach) and even though I stop watching Bleach, it is fun reading about it. YYH was a (pioneer) anime for me which means, it helped me get into anime. But I also notice some similarities in YYH and Inuyasha like the main characters attitude both Inuyasha and Yusuke had that cocky attitude, plus they were both carabiums (half-demons).

I'm amazed with the level of detail of your discussion but it wouldn't hurt if you separated your thoughts in diff paragraphs. I agree on some of the similarities of Bleach and YuYu Hakusho... Recycling in various forms of media (as one mentioned in one of the threaRAB which I can't remeraber) has been the trend nowadays... Only the gifted ones would be able to come up with a whole original concept...

it got kind of hard to keep up the worRAB started messing with my eyes lol.

but after a long read I see what your saying..but thats basically a concept flip..
in anycase I Think I watch the show specifically because of the similiarites to some of my fav anime's ..
& I'd like to point out aizen is the main villan not kariya..kariya just wanted to destory the society, and the aizen thing started before the bount story, but it carried on past it..
i've never watched yyh so I Cant say much..except I Might watch it now lol

Couldn't agree more.. I guess it's understandable in a sense, cause authors of stuff like Naruto, One Piece and Bleach grew up on DBZ, YYH, Saint Seiya...etc. I've tried writing stuff and I also seem to end up with a concept very similar to whatever it is I'm influenced with.

There are some let's say prominent ingredients to Shounen animes, the bad guys becoming good is one of them, as far as Inuyasha goes, it's definately similar to Yuyu Hakusho in some aspects, I'm not against Shounen series being influenced by others but the thing is, Inuyasha started out with small similarities to Yuyu but was able to find its own voice rather early, what makes Bleach highly condemnable is that even now it continues to rely on Yuyu Hakusho as the basis for its formula, 200+ episodes is plenty of time for Bleach to become a distinctive entity, but it just never feels that the series is ever planning on dropping the many shounen cliches that plague it, the latest Bleach events before the fillers weren't very devoid of YYH either, the way Soul society has taken measures against Heuco Mondo (if u think of Soul Society as Spirit World and Heuco Mondo as Demon World, it all falls into place) and the concept of portals between the three world are both similar events to what occured at the end of the Chapter Black Saga and begining of the Three Kings Saga in Yuyu, at any rate, it's kinda sad how Bleach is twice as popular as YYH among modern day anime fans without a great deal of them realizing the amount of impact YYH has on Bleach, but I guess to most fans, as long as the series is energetic and flashy it produces tons of entertainment and that's all they need.
