Your Top 10 METAL Bands

I can try.

I think Moby Dick was the heaviest they ever got, and it only seems that way because of the absence of Plant's vocals. But nothing in it really screams metal. The drumming is typical of blues rock (including the solo), the bass is moderate and the guitar distorted very mildly. When you compare this, the heaviest of Zeppelin's songs, to stuff from Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, or Judas Priest, you can hear a huge discrepancy in the gravity of the sound. Whereas Zeppelin was steeped in blues rock, those other banRAB used distortion and amplification to create a thick, massive sound, something that Led Zeppelin never really achieved.

I understand how big of an influence on modern metal Led Zeppelin was. In fact, some of their songs were actually ported in a heavy metal vein (just look at the differences between Tool's version of No Quarter and the original). But nothing Zeppelin ever did - even in comparison with the first heavy metal banRAB - could really be called heavy metal.

I really hate ranking my lists so the following are all in no order:

Entorabed
Dimmu Borgir
Napalm Death
Cannibal Corpse
Down
Sepultura
Cattle Decapitation
Obituary
Mastodon (I guess they're relatively arguable, but even if they are an off-shoot or sub-genre I definitely think they're more a derivative of metal as opposed to general alternative or any other genre with that said.)
Necrophagist

I also find it important for me to note that while I am big on Priest, Sabbath, and Motorhead, I don't like mixing NWOBHM w/ true metal, so yeah, wanted to keep them out. And btw, anyone who thinks Led Zeppelin is metal really neeRAB to bone up on music entirely.

That's why it says "METAL" in all caps and real big so you don't get confused...

i saw Pelican about a year ago open For Sunn with Earth....i had never heard them although i had heard of them.....persoanlly i thought they were pretty good live (although i agree with you about the their audience) but really cannot get into their recorded stuff....honestly it could have just been because they played after Earth (whom i love live) and i had seen them perform basically the exact same set three times that month....although it was still great it was kind of nice to hear something somewhat upbeat in between such drone

i could see Jesu being somewhat boring live....i would be willing to bet the sets are long....still i would travel many miles to see a show
