Wow, I'm surprised I haven't posted in this thread. Anyway.

Cardcaptor Sakura - This anime makes me so nostalgic. I love everything about it, the animation, music, characters. It has such a high rewatch quality and it never has gotten old.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle - Tsubasa is deceiving. You think it has this nice circumstance where the main character is in trouble and her friend rushes to save her. There is so much more to it, and the way the characters develop and change during the series is great.

Kino No Tabi - For 13 episodes, it was just a nice series. Kino goes to all these different places, and so many lessons about life are taught from the people she meets.

Gurren Lagann - One of the only mecha anime you would see me watching, it just has so many awesome battle scenes, and is an anime that really takes chances.

Kaze no Stigma - I just like this one. I've heard the manga is much darker toned, but the anime still has a lot of laughs.

Haruka Nogizaka's Secret - Finished the first season the other day, and just seeing Yuuto and Haruka's relationship, her secret anime/manga obsessions, and all the funny misunderstandings makes it hard not to love it.

Sweet Valerian - It's almost like, the Powerpuff Girls, in CLAMP's style. Enough said. (:

Fullmetal Alchemist - It was one of the first series I seriously got into. If any anime taught you something, it would be this one. I include Brotherhood when I say this too.

CLAMP School Detectives - The amount of trouble these kids get into, I just can't not love this series. It has a lot of cute moments.

Elemental Gelade - Even though I hated the animation, hated the voice acting, the fact that it is off one of my favorite manga makes me love it. And, because it is one of the few series that has a clear ending.

I can't consider myself an expert in the field of anime and my oppinions might differ from those of the greatest majority of the posters because of my age and exigence in selecting my favored series . First of all I first watched anime aside sailor moon/DBZ which I watched by mistake and made no particular impact on me one day when I was tired and couldn't sleep and accidentaly stumbled upon the Yu Yu Hakuso series . That helped me loosen up and have some fun but actually what got me into the genre was the series Slayers . It was a hot summer day and during the commercial break I started switching TV channels and hapened to discover the first episode of Slayers anime aired (at the time I was 22) and have seen the introductory scenes where the main character was caricaturized and it had the lines "Where monsters rampage I'm there to take them down ; where treasure glitters I'm there to claim it ; when an enemy rises to fight me victory will me MIIINEEE ! " At that moment I started laughing and put aside my remote control . 25 minutes later I was rising from the floor after finally having stopped laughing started looking for my remote control and climbed back in my armchair .

At the moment I have selected the series that have made a great impact upon me :

1. Slayers (all series except the new ones being aired in 2008/2009 ) - This is a great anime with great humour and nice storyline and as a matter of fact is the only anime that has fillers of better quality than the main arcs . It is derived from a Dungeons and Dragons adventure and those having participated in such a game online or with friends can tell that the characters and their reactions correspond to what a roleplaying character would do .

2. Great Teacher Onizuka - This is a truly impressive anime letting aside the graphics . The storyline , understanding of human psyche and the definition of what a human being and a man should be can be found in this series and make for a unique watch .

3. Death Note - I enjoyed the storyline and mostly it impressed was the fact that it states utopia cannot be enforced onto the real world no matter how strong of a means you use . I have seen myself in this anime more than once because there is a time in life when the latin dicton "Perat mundi ,fiat justitia " seems the only right thing to do and basically this is just the reverse stating the world cannot be changed unless all the people are changed ( remember the scene where N escapes from the skyscraper by throwing off cash ? )

4. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumyia - It can be treated as a light novel and is from this point of view a work of art without a shred of doubt but personally I like to look at things from a cultural sense and I can state that this story can be considered as in-depth as "Alice in wonderland" of Lewiss Carol or "Le petit Prince" of Antoine de Saint-Exupery . But the latter approach turns Haruhi into a normal person and all the other characters into the extremes and failures of our current society mirroring themselves onto Haruhi . As a side note I have found the series to be revigorating when you are tired

5. 12 Kingdoms - This is the initiatic journey of a high school girl that is tossed into a strange world by a man named Keiki . She is forced to face her own fears and emotions and becomes from a girl trying to please the people around her a worthy ruler of the kingdom of Kei . Note : this one is addictive and the characters presented here give the sensation that you might actually meet them in real life ; this big of an impact does the immersion in the anime universe leave onto you .

6. Kenichi , the strongest disciple - The story starts off with the introduction of a young high school student who lacks friends and has books as his sole companion . Troughout his school days he has always been bullied and being threatened to be thrown off the school's karate club unless he wins a fight he starts going to a strange dojo that a new transfer student recommended him . The story is vivid and contains elements of humour , true martial arts knowledge , metaphores like the ones in zen stories and a really well designed plot .

7. Jigoku Shoujo - Don't tell me you never wanted to sell your soul . Would you sell your soul for vengeance ? This has a great emphasis on human cruelty and is a sad series and also has some horror elements presenting tortures that the ones sent to hell must experience before dying . The storyline is great and the anime makes the world of hell look subjected to the rules of karma or the law of action and reaction . IMHO the second series tried to humanize the avenging spirits and fails to draw out the full emotional drama present in the first series .

8. Nodame Cantabile - Great music , nice story and it emphasizes that what makes us human isn't perfection but emotion ( especially the part where the orchestra music makes Chiaki sick ) . The only anime I have cried at and it's not because it was sad but rather the music was so good and worked very well with the images .

9. Black Lagoon - I have seen people saying they don't understand dialogues from Death Note but to my logical mind they make complete sense but the dialogues here are what lock me down . What can you say to someone pointing a gun at you to make him change his mind ? This is typical action anime but it gives the feeling of insanity almost as much as the novels about World War 2 by Sven Hassel . It has some insane arcs too but the one I found most intriguing was the one with the psychotic twins of age below 12 that were contract killers .

I don't know any series worthy of taking the last place here but there are some other anime I enjoyed : Paradise Kiss , Kiddy Grade , One Piece (makes me think about the stories of baron Munchausen) , Code Geass ( ok average anime but has the greatest ending of everything I've seen and only Kenichi and GTO endings come close and from this point of view is the reverse of Death Note ) and some others .

Thanks for reading this wall of text

No order on these...

Darker than Black 1 & 2 - Great storylines, great characters, great animation. I have to say this series is just worth watching and owning.

Fullmetal Alchemist - Because it never gets dull. The immersible plot makes it easy for anyone to get into it... not to mention the top notch animation and musical soundtracks.

Fullmetal Panic! - It's mecha, and I happen to love me some mecha. This anime mixes comedy, action, and romance pretty well... it's a very entertaining series.

Bleach - I've only started watching this and it's already one of my favorites, keep in mind I've already spoiled the whole series for myself so I know what happens but aside from the "fillers", this series is a solid one.

Chrno Crusade - I have never been keen on anime with religious aspects but, Chrno Crusade pulls it off very well. Lovable cast and a very strong ending.

Kannagi - What a great comedic anime... I just love everything about this anime. If you're just looking for laughs, this anime will exceed your expectations... if you're looking for something else, the plot is not so bad.

Fate/Stay Night - I'll say this right now, this anime didn't have incredible animation at all but what it did have was the classic plot from the game and a beautiful soundtrack. Great anime, great game.

D.Gray-man - For some reason this series resembles FMA a lot, I guess it's the main characters who are both determined and strong willed. This is a good series with nice action and decent music.

Gundam SEED Destiny - Why do I love it? Because of the awesome OPs and EDs and the nice original soundtracks, not to mention the epic moments and epic battles.

Chrome Shelled Regios - Not an anime I see mentioned a lot but this one was awesome! Layfon is such a great main character and the plot is full of subplots which make you wonder how they all tie together. Good series to watch. Season 2 plz.

Vash is just too cute in the anime.

NARUTO
I have this weird obsession with ninjas.
...I'm also a massive ShikaTema fan.

CHOBITS
I love the storyline and all the characters.
A rare anime for me to come by.

DIGIMON
...Need I really say?
It's freakin' Digimon! D:

POKEMON
Loved the Kanto/Johto regions in the anime,
but after Misty left and things were changed,
I don't really enjoy it as much as I used to...
The manga, however, is super special awesome!

BEYBLADE
This show was greater than sliced bread to me.
Kai was my favorite Blader and Dranzer was my
favorite bit-beast. Tyson was funny, Ray was sweet
and Max... Well, Max is Max and we all love him for it.
There's also Dizzy and Kenny but - meh.

YU-GI-OH!
The japanese is way cooler than the dubbed.
Srsly. But comparing the anime to the manga's,
the comic kicks way more butt. However, I still
love to watch the show. It's grown on me.

CARDCAPTORS
KERO! KERO! KERO! KERO! KEROOO!!!!!

TENCHI MUYO
Naked chicks, perverted adults.
Need I say more?

Here are mine in no particular order...

Kaleido Star: I love the fact that Kaleido Star is about the circus, about going for your dreams, and about figuring out what your goals are. I love the story and the characters.
FullMetal Panic!: I love all three seasons of this (FMP!, FMPF?, FMP:TSR). I love how this series can be funny then 360 to completely serious. I also love Kaname and Sousuke's relationship, so cute.
Sailor Moon: This was my first anime. I just recently watched all of Sailor Stars (the last season), and I loved it all over again.
Karin: Such a cute anime about a reverse vampire (she gives people blood instead of taking it), the manga is also adorable and I recommend it.
Lucky Star: Funny show. And it reminds me of high school. I love Konata and Kagami.
Cardcaptor Sakura: My 2nd anime, cute story, cute characters, I had the wand and the Clow Card as a kid, yea...LOVED IT.
Battle Athletes: Not a well known series, but it's about girls going to a sports academy. I enjoyed it and I'm not a sports person, lol.
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan: I bought this to cheer me up on a random occasion, I think it's hilarious and if you need a good laugh check this out.
Full Moon o Sagashite: It's about singing, and it's cute. And the shinigami turn into animals!
Fruits Basket: Again, the people turn into animals! And it's such a heartwarming story.
