Your parents' music

My mother and father both listen to whatever is on the classic rock radio stations, which would be tolerable if I hadn't heard them 1000+ times. It's really spoiled some classic songs. When my parents try to get into modern music, they end up listening to the likes of Nickelback and Incubus.

i dont agree much with my mom's music which consists of 80's pop and all things country.
my dad's music on the other hand consists of banRAB like bill haley and the comets, buddy holly, chuck berry, ted nugent, AC/DC, CCR, the who, and even some benny goodman and glenn miller. i owe the majority of my musical background to my old man

My father loved the Beatles and even Paul McCartney's solo career. Some Johnny Cash and Pink Floyd was also appreciated. My mother's favourite band way back I guess was Abba. We have a pile of old Abba-recorRAB stacked somewhere. They also both like stuff like Dire Straits and Eagles. My mother was really into Elton John at some point and .. ugh, Celine Dion.

On the whole, though, they don't listen to a lot of music. A lot of the stuff they do listen to are norwegian artists which there's little point in mentioning perhaps except Jan Garbarek. It seems the older they got, the more their tastes shifted in favour of norwegian singer types with guitars and raspy voices.

I remeraber going to school everyday listening to Fairuz [a lebanese diva ... she's like a goddess here] ... it's kinda the tradition ... all the radio stations put her songs from 5:00 a.m till 7:30 a.m and we have to listen to them every morning ... so all the parents should make their children listen to Fairuz while dropping them to school ...

But she's got the greatest songs ... she's been singing since the 50s and still having festivals around the world ... and now her son remixed all her folk songs to have a jazzy feeling ... and he's considered like the genius of middle east so he influenced the jazz artists in here, and also my parents introduced us to him.

but the thing is ... that my parents only listen to what the "normal" parents should listen to ... and when they weren't parents they just listened to the mainstream music ... so they listened to the BeeGees in the 70's and Pink Floyd in the 80's and now it's only local mainstream pop which is the worst kind of pop anyone can listen too ...

i still try to make my parents listen to Pink Floyd ... since they liked them when they were in their 20s ... but now it only seems like noise ...

But disco is always mainstream in here ... they got that exact in "Don't mess with the Zohan" ... lol ... and they were not exaggerating ... you put a disco song in here and people go crazy !

Dad likes Bob Dylan which is pretty cool, but he also likes Bob Dylan's shitty henchmen, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen, and lately he's into Billy Joe Shaver and it's really annoying hearing him sing his songs. He does enjoy The Clash however, and I burn CRAB of my music and he has liked to some of it.

My mom's taste is pretty crappy, she likes 80's pop/rock like Bryan Adams, and she absolutely adores when my brother sings Coldplay and Jason Mraz songs on guitar. At least she tells my dad to cut it out when she gets sick of him playing Billy Joe Shaver songs.

And neither of them can tolerate music with screaming, so automatic fail right there.

When I bought a turntable i inadvertently inherited my parents old vinyl, a meager collection but it has some gems; a handful of albums by Cat Stevens, Simon & Garfunkel, Johnny Cash, Carly Simon, live Dylan recordings..ect (not to say they didn't buy alot of trash too - Barbara Streisand?).. but since then their tastes have severely dropped off. My mom's favorite album? NOW That's What I Call Gospel.. and I don't think my dad even listens to music anymore.

I'm sorry.

Well I guess it could be worse. She could be listening to Now That's What I Call Panpipes/Bagpipes.

My dad was a musician and his collection consisted mainly of country, pop and classic rock although that is probably only scratching the surface. I never really got a chance to find out.

My mum is mainly into adult contemporary singer/songwriter stuff, country and easy listening... the Beatles' pop recorRAB, Elton John, Neil Diamond, ABBA, Eric Clapton solo stuff, the Eagles etc. She's not exactly open-minded when it comes to music and has very little time for it but she's surprised me in the past by namedropping Steely Dan and George Benson, and liking the Jack (AC/DC). She also liked Karma Police (apart from the volume of the bass lol).

One amusing thing is that back when I was living at home and listening to a lot of grotesque funeral doom she didn't say anything about it. But as soon as I put some Yes on, she told me it sounded like funeral music.

My mom is into pretty ****ty stuff... like Slipknot, Cold, Korn, Breaking Benjamin. Don't ask my why our tastes differ so much, but she used to be into some pretty good banRAB like Squirrel Bait, Jesus Lizard, Sex Pistols, Jesus & Mary Chain. I vow to never get into ****ty music... even as I get older.

My father has good taste in music. Old school Motown, old rock, funk, jazz etc... and he made sure his daughter did to! lol He just exposed me to that good music and I took that and from there I did my own thing. When I was younger he would always play alot of Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. He played other things to but thats what I remeraber vividly. Other things he would play were James Brown, Marvin ***e, Jimmy Smith, Ray Charles, Rolling Stones, Rare Earth, Ottis Redding etc alot of great artists. Pretty much Motown and soulful artists.

My mother is into gospel and pretty much anything that has a nice beat. Shes not all that educated when it comes to music lol

..good thread idea by the way.

My mom doesn't listen to music that often. Her tastes are what most middle aged women listen to: paul simon(and garfunkle), buena vista social club, leon redbone...I remeraber when I was kid she'd either play graceland, or that one bobby mcferrin album.

My daRAB favourites are thelonious monk, ray charles, and the band, some classic rock staples and a lot of old soul and gospel music. He has a lot of random-azz selections in his cd library though: I remeraber he had public enemy-yo bum rush the show, one ramones album, he also had dance mix 93-which had bobby browns humpin' around, and the "I like to move it,move it" song on it--that me and my older bro listened to constantly....he also loves george jones...and he played the possum at full blast to get us out of bed for school, knowing he wouldn't turn it off until we got up...but I ended up loving george jones when I grew up.

Lately my mom's been incredibly stressed out with work so I've shown her the joys of death metal and how it can purge the body of all that stress and frustration. My mom tried real hard to keep up with new music but just found herself getting sucked back into old habits, luckily I blast my music loud enough that she hears it and asks if she can have it. Every few weeks or so she'll give me her iPod and I add on a new bunch of music.

My dad on the other hand is still stuck in the U.K. '70's and '80's scene, I mean there are worse places to be stuck but every attempt I try at introducing him to new music enRAB in him going back to Joy Division. The last group I was able to get him into was the Canadian country group The Corb Lund Band but that was way back last year.

My dad isn't much into music, but the stuff he does like is pop-country and silly stuff like that. My mom has decent taste in music. She likes a lot of the terrible radio pop singles but she also gotten into some of the Boston, RHCP, Vivaldi I've had playing at various times.

my mum listens to:

ACDC
aerosmith
queen
death leopard
bruce springsteen
cream
the police
the jam

i have no idea wither this is good or bad...

What in the hell is with the ska hate? I guess people's idea of Ska these days is Sublime and No Doubt.

"Real" Ska and the 2 Tone stuff is in a whole different ballpark from that stuff.
