Your parents' music

My mom and dad got me into blues, and then soul, so for that I'll be eternally grateful. However, my mom likes these 80's/90's one hit wonder pop songs from people I've never ever heard of, as well as the other day had me download Barry Manilow and Neil Sedaka for her. :\ My dad is more on the rock side now days, mostly mainstream stuff. For a while he was spinning Ray Charles every day in this truck, that was nice.

A Day In The Life of Lateralus:

"Hey mom and dad, you've got to check out this album I just got. It's by a band called Tool, and they're awesome!"

Dad: "Scapel?"

"No, no, Dad it's music, y'know like recorded sounRAB? Let me just put it on for you guys and you'll see...

(puts on 10,000 Days)

Dad: "WHAT THE? MOM WE'RE GONNA NEED 40CC'S OF NUTELLA STAT!!!!!!!!"

I have grown to tolerate my moms taste for 80s hair metal.

However I can't say the same for my 11 year old brother and his Motley Crue, Nickelback and Soulja Boy CRAB. Most parents might be appalled by this because of the sexual content in their lyrics but that's not what bothers me.

Dirty music isn't bad for children, sh*tty music is, exposing impressionable children to hair metal, post grunge and crunk pretty much qualifies as child abuse.

My mother has a rather odd taste in music, very folk/ celtic/ hippie, er....I guess it would be a bad example but no banRAB are springing to mind, Blackmoores night...But then even more celtic/ folky.

My father, has always had quite a good taste in music and I can't really pinhole anything in particular he listens to.

My mom has mostly crappy taste but mi padre basically started my love of music and we continue to talk about it together all the time. He really has great taste except for occasionally when he gets turned on to some modern pop that I have to explain to him is not good.

i love my mum's taste in music. occassionally she'll put on some westlife or il devo (at which point i'm forced to yell "that's not music, that's just noise" at her up the stairs) but just flicking through her CRAB today, it's all full of oasis and kasabian and aerosmith, and i realise i love her

are you erabarressed by your parents music? or do you owe your own taste to their good examples?

My Dad listens exclusively to classical and my Mum's into Rod Stewart, Neil Diamond, the Moody Blues and various other such stuff I don't listen to at all.

So basically I had to make my own way when it came to musical taste, seeing as I have virtually nothing in common with my parents' tastes.

I was like that until I was fifteen or so, I never listened to music, it was just noise to me.

My parents don't really listen to music much anymore, they'll listen to the radio when we drive, but other then that they only play music on our stereo thing at home once a month or so, it's kind of sad in a way. When either of them listen to anything, it's usually the Beatles, Santana, Dire Straits, or various classical artists, and based on talking to my mom she had decent taste in music when she was younger, not so much my dad, he was more into 70's soft rock stuff.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

My parents like exactly the same things, which is terrifying... My dad is more musical than my mom, but they listen to the same stuff, which is pretty much anything. Rolling Stones, the Beatles, classical, Zeppelin, Wilco, country rock, zydeco, African music, old soul and blues... I don't really like any of their music, but i appreciate the interest in music they gave me. I didn't like any music until i was 12 or so, and for a while my interests were very limited. The only music i was exposed to was their music. And then i found metal... sigh

My father has good taste in music. He's into 60s rock, British folk, glam rock, punk, new wave, soul, country and classical. His CD collection was very important to me when my music tastes were developing at the age of 15-16.

Although I'm not Hispanic, I was practically raised by Vincente Hernandez and Linda Ronstadt during her Mexican music phase. The 8 track on the huge cabinet console was eventually worn out, when De Que Manera Te Olvido was played one too many times.

yeah a didnt think it would be too hot haha!
since i dont listen to the same stuff as my mum, we are on different wavelenths haha!
my mums more of a rock fan, whereas me & my siblings are all electronica fans, massive electronica fans :D

I grew up hearing almost nothing but classical, baroque, opera, and ABBA (all of which I still like, by the way) in the house or my parents' cars. Luckily, around age 10, my parents let me start bringing home whatever music of my own and play it on their system. They got me my own stereo pretty quickly.

Mostly West African tunes for my parents and gospel. A lot of King Sunny Ade but when I was younger they listened to Prince, Michael Jackson, Sade, Bob Marley, etc.

And by listened to I mean played the songs at parties.
