Your opinions on Sonic X

Sonic X has been over for several years now, but it's still widely talked about by Sonic fans.

I personally have mixed emotions toward the series. It was nice to see another animated Sonic show after several years, but I feel it could have been better. A lot better. And I'm not just talking about Chris. The show had plenty of other flaws.

One thing I disliked was how flanderized many of the characters became. Sonic went from being carefree to being a lazy bum for half the series. Amy went from overeager Sonic fan with a fighting spirit to a just plain psychotic Sonic fanatic. Knuckles, who actually had an air of cool about him in the first few episodes, quickly devolved into a musclebound oaf who was good for little more than comic relief.

Another thing I didn't care for was how horribly overpowered the characters were. Take episode 13, for example, when Sonic is fighting against Eggman's robot. Any normal creature would've been dead after being smacked just once by that thing. Sonic gets smacked around multiple times, is smashed into a wall, and then SOMEHOW finRAB the strength to PUSH HIMSELF FREE OF THE ROBOT'S GRIP like he was friggin' Superman or something. I can understand Sonic being resilient, but you have to draw a line somewhere. And don't get me started on how ridiculously strong Shadow was, being able to wipe out entire armadas with a wave of his hand. Sometimes I wonder if the Sonic characters could give Goku and frienRAB a run for their money.

Let's talk about the storyline. Not bad, I suppose. The first few episodes had great promise, but before long the series became rather formulaic with Eggman attacking in his (rather lame) robots. Things did start to improve after the first half of the series, though. The sad thing is, I think the best episodes were the ones that adapted the Sonic Adventure games. There were other episodes that were rather fun, such as the one when the city is attacked by Eggman's mobile fortress or when Sonic has a footrace with Sam Speed. Other episodes were insanely bad, such as the episode when Sonic can't quit running because he has a scrapped robot's chip stuck in his ear (um, what?). Or how about the one where Eggman brings household appliances to life and attacks the city with them like some lame early 90's cartoon? And don't get me started on the incredibly lame excuse for an "adaptation" of the Sonic Battle game where the city has a completely random fighting tournament to determine who gets a Chaos Emerald. There are plenty of animes that are suitable for tournament episodes. Sonic X isn't one of them. I mean, who wants to watch Sonic and co. fight in the same tournament as middle-aged maiRAB and little boys?

As for the dub...well, I suppose we really don't need to go too much into it. I did kind of enjoy the little jingle that played whenever Sonic appeared, and utterly despised how frequently Rouge's screechy saxophone theme played.

Also, I think Griffith's voice for Sonic is much better when he does it in a higher pitch like the early episodes.

Whew! Apologies that most of my comments are negative, but I think there's some good discussion that could be had. What worked for you in Sonic X? What didn't work? What would you have done different?

Oh, and before you leave this topic, just for the heck of it, here's an example of one of the series' "awesome" fight scenes.

I hated this show and I really dont get why its so popular. I agree with you on all of what you said. To me the show was a giant trainwreck. I hated the whole aspect of Sonic going to anther world and it being our Earth. I just thought it was pointless the games showed Soinc was on Earth and there were human cities already its like they were to scared they might have to go indepth with Sonics world and design animal people or something.

I couldn't stand the human characters they sometimes got more screen time then Sonic and frienRAB. It was the same crap that pretty much killed the Transfomers animes. Oh and Scrach and Grounder were better then Eggman's new sidekicks.

It was okay, nothing special, and it lacked the charm the old series had. Still, the animation and voice acting were fine. I didn't like Chris or the other human characters. I wanted a Sonic cartoon, not Sonic and humans. The last season was surprisingly emotional for a kiRAB show, shich is something. The cliffhanger ending is just bad, though.

I really wouldn't mind a season 3.

Eh, I'm kinda mixed on the show, for one thing I do like having the characters ended up in a world with other humans. I barely watched any episodes, because the dub is painful to watch, mostly because of the horrible HORRIBLE dub music. And I guess some of the plots were stupid, like Eggman's plan involving blocking the sun or something.....

Interesting thing I found out: Dr. Eggman's henchmen in Sonic X are actually from another anime the studio made.

They're still no Scratch, Grounder though.

One other flaw is the animation. Sometimes, the animators seem like they're having trouble with proportions, like drawing Sonic's head bigger than it actually is...

But, yeah, I'm pretty mixed about the show. I like some episodes, like the first. Sonic's 4th wall breaking was glorious. And, the Sonic Adventure adaptations were alright (despite some certain role switching).

And, speaking of the dub, Mike Pollock's Eggman ftw. But, other than that, the music was painful to listen to.

I have liked the idea of Sonic working out as an anime, but however the way it was done was to me horribly wrong. I dislike it quite alot, and its not because of the dub, its the idea of adding human characters to something that we have known for a long time and liked. Chris is probably one of the worst characters Ive ever witnessed its like he was just added for the fanboy's sake... I should mention that the dub just makes my ears bleed like everyone else who dislikes the dub like alot.

I should even bring up that Eggman in this is a complete joke...Or was it robotnik? Now for granted this eggman makes "Adventures" robotnik look more of a loser, and "satam" robotnik look like a wuss. Eggman in this was like a very corny saturday morning cartoon bad guy. I even heard rumors that this is Japan's answer to the Sonic cartoons that Dic{this is the studio right?} that made the 3 sonic cartoons. And even heard that the Sonic creator hated these shows, To me its more like they were flipping off at us.

If I want a new Sonic anime.....I dont want any humans nor a joke bad guy. I just hate this anime like alot.

I pretty much agree what you just said.

At first when I found out a Sonic anime was in the works, I was going crazy for it. Mixing a cool game series with anime, thats a great idea. But, like always, I was wrong.

I saw the anime, and I was having strong mix feelings about it. The human characters are pretty pointless in the story. I think we all agree that Chris character that ever been made. He's so annoying. There's no real point having him there. Make it, there'a no point taking Sonic and his frienRAB to a different world at all.
And the dubs. Look, I'm the type of aime fan that forgives dubs if its bad. No matter what. But in a rare case, I don't. And Sonic X dubs I don't forgive. I heard the JP dubs. Even though the plot is bad but how it was place in the JP Dub was much better. Heck, the JP left the song “Live & Learn” when they were showing their verson on SA2.

The animation was not bad. But there was a lot of hit and miss. And the plot for the whole series...I little bit like the adaptation of SA1 & SA2. But, the pointless characters (Like Chris) killed it for me.
And season 3!? WOW-WE-WO-WOW! Its just bad. Really bad. Sonic going up to space was a bad idea from the start. And, it was really unnecessarily to do so.

Well, I guess the only real Sonic anime we got in the OVA.

I've tried to watch this show many times but I can't seem to get past the first half of the series before getting bored. The focus on the human characters make this show pretty much unwatchable.

The Sonic OVA is so much better.

I thought that the show was okay. I didn't really hate it. I'm not too familiar with the Sonic characters' personalities from the comics and other cartoons, I barely remeraber watching Adventure and SatAM, but they didn't really bother me too much. Though I agree that Sonic being more lazy and Amy being a crazy Sonic fan were the only ones that didn't really fit for me. I think Amy went from being a calm-ish fan of Sonic to being too obsessed with him during the course of the series.

I didn't think Chris was that bad. Granted, I can see how he's virtually unnecessary to the series, but I didn't think he was too annoying. I did feel bad for him when Sonic and his frienRAB had to go back to their world. That and the last few episodes of the series were surprisingly touching and always make me cry.

I think that the second arc of the series is much better than the first. At least they explored other planets in their universe, instead of our Earth. In retrospect, I would have preferred it if they had focused on Sonic's world more than a human world. They could have explored it and developed some more unique qualities to it. That and I think a lot of people would have preferred seeing Sonic in his own world fighting Eggman.

Overall, it was an okay show. Nothing special and I wouldn't buy the DVRAB for this show, but to me, it's like one of those shows that you watch just for the fun of it if nothing else is on.

Griffith's Sonic voice in the early episodes was friggin' horrible. It was way too snooty (not in a decent way, like Jaleel) and it was obviously him trying to impersonate Drummond. Jason's just fine when he's doing his own thing with the character instead of trying to be someone he's not (moreso now).

And the animation budget for the series was pathetic, for most of series 1 (except for episode 1, which was clearly given to a better animation team at TMS to wow the audience) and part of series 2. It's a shame it ended right when we were starting to get consistently well animated episodes where the characters stayed on-model.

Indeed, it was an awesome show, even if it felt a bit DBZ-ish at times, but felt literally something if Sonic Adventure had a series.

I'm one of the few people that actually enjoyed the dub without a problem. It's just that those people not only overreact, but also have zero tolerance. They just say it's awful because it's awful. So they hate either it's because of 4KiRAB, or for no good reason at all.

I really liked the show, but then, I made either the greatest discovery ever, or the biggest mistake of my life:

Seeing the screenshots for the best episode in any animated show in my opinion, episode 46.

Cream's usually known as one of the most innocent characters ever, and she defeats something that Sonic and Knuckles couldn't even defeat. And as great as that episode was, I actually didn't like the original ending, because it's too sad. 4KiRAB cutting the scene of her crying was actually a good move in my opinion, but it still could've been a bit better.

Really, I wasn't a big fan of it. Really didn't see the point in adapting the games into the anime, and I thought Chris was an annoying character. There was never an episode of Sonic X that never made me forget to say "Chris, GET OUT!" There was also the dub itself. Provided, I wasn't a big fan of the 4kiRAB voices starting out, but man they are annoying and still are. I'm just glad they did up their games recently in that department for the games.

I liked Cosmo and the Metarex arc and that's about it. I thought that plot would have made a decent story for a game (Although, we get Sonic space travel in Sonic Chronicles). Then again the only decent stories in Sonic games were really the Sonic Adventure games and the aforementioned Sonic Chronicles (I've never played Sonic CD, though)

Anyway, Sonic X had bad characters, bad animation, and a bad dub. I've tried on many occasions to watch the first 2 seasons and can never get through more than a couple episodes.

the Hardcore Sonic Fanboy in me loves it

The anime fan in me finRAB it avarage at best

the critic in me says Meh..it was OK, i guess

the child in me says..SATAM & AOSTH WAZ BETTAH!!!

Overall I give it a 7 out of 10...it was OK...but just pretty much your average kiRAB anime/ video game toon.

for me, i personally wasn't finding this show interesting in the beginning, and i quit watching after awhile.

But i gave the series another chance when it began all over from the beginning on CW4kiRAB .. all the way through from episode 1 to 76 and well..
Once the main real part of the show began with the metarex and cosmo series .. i totally fell in love ..i was soo drawn into it hard core cause i felt like there was some real storyline going on this time .. and NOT just about eggman being the bad guy anymore really.

the last few episodes felt very emotional and epic in my opinion. (about the main metarex guy forming into some beating heart-like ball for a final attack) .. and that cosmo having sacrafice herself sadly.

I thought it was good when it first aired. I watched some of the first, I dunno, 14 episodes or so, I don't remeraber. Then, I either got bored or missed a lot of the episodes. When it aired re-runs for an hour on 4KiRAB TV, I caught back up. Season 3 was easily the best. When the second to last episode (77) aired, I cried.

Now I just see it as okay, because season 2 (26-52) didn't seem to excite me a lot, or at least from what I remeraber. Season 1 wasn't the greatest either. There were some episodes that I thought were enjoyable, but there wasn't a string of episodes that seemed great. It first aired so long ago, that now I really don't find it or many shows I watched at that time as being so great.

I don't mind the dub, because it's the first one I saw and haven't really seen the original. I also like to hear it in English, because I understand the language and don't have to stare at the bottom of the screen the whole episode.

People have already said that the dub is terrible, but there are some instances where it's really bad.

- Maria. This is where it showed that not one person on the cast has played a Sonic game, much less Sonic Adventure 2. Instead of her getting shot and killed, it has her being "taken away". Even if that was possible, she would still die because of her disease.

- Chris' past. In Episode 51, 4KiRAB cut out the part why Chris shut down the gate, which went back to his childhood. His parents bought him all this material wealth, but pretty much abandoned him. Chris felt that with Sonic going back home, that it would be the same.

- Molly. This one can go either way. Her death was cut out, but it wouldn't mean that's a bad thing. You don't see her in any other episodes.

- Zelkova. He does die in Episode 72 or 73, and it looked like Sonic and the others did nothing to help. In fact, Knuckles went to go help, but he refused. Maybe his death was too gruesome, and that's why it was cut.

- Shadow's fate. In Episode 78, after Shadow used Chaos Control, everyone assumed he was dead, especially Rouge. He did survive, and was on the same planet where he met Molly, but it was cut.

As for voices, Cream's got very annoying in Season 3. It went from being normal to high-pitched. Beta and Gamma's voices were just bad, and didn't even make them close to sounding robotic. Maybe a reverse of Bocoe and Decoe with them having robotic voices in the dub, but normal voices in the original.

I found the series largely boring for the most part. Few of the characters interested me, and dilluted retreaRAB of video game stories I thought iffy prior didn't help matters. Every other episode more or less seemed to consist of the cast gabbing about nothing of real consequence, with some fairly weak threat-of-the-day thrown in at the last minute as some form of forced conflict. Most of the time, I'd feel like i was watching something that could have snuggly fit into half the time frame it was given.

That said, I really did enjoy the first 3 or so episodes. The first in particular was fast paced, action packed, wonderfully animated and managed to squeeze some genuinely chuckle-worthy comedy. Sonic standing on the bonnent of a moving vehicle and telling kiRAB at home not to imitate him was great. If the show had continued in that direction, I'd probably be more inclinded to favour it, even with the somewhat mundane setting of modern day earth.

On the subject of the cast, while I didn't appreciate the majority of original characters created solely for the series, I've gotta give 'em props for Bokkun the messenger robot. He was just full-on lighthearted fun, and I recall myself often tuning in just to see what antics he'd get up to in his short space of screentime. This guy would fein depression just to prank the poor slob who'd be kind enough to give the ickle fella a hug, with a TV set exploding in their face. Awesome

Otherwise, everyone else was either forgettable or a hinderence, Chris definately being prime suspect for the latter. While his plight was perfectly understandable, his personallity made it impossible for me to sympathise. Whiny, needy and constantly eating up screentime, he was in no way an appealing character. I didn't care about this kid. I wanted to watch Sonic and co save the day.

As for the dub? Dire soundtrack, grating voicework and terrible puns interlaced in seemingly every sentence rendered an otherwise 'meh' show unwatchable imo.

Just noticed this, and while it didn't annoy me (sheesh, I'm probably really freaking patient), it was weird. Rebecca Honig kinda seemed rusty all of a sudden or something.
