My daughter ( a teenager) who has been working at a fast food restaurant for just over a year, keeps complaining about the customers that don't clear off their tables and throw their stuff in the garbage. I myself have worked in fast food for many years while an adult having to support myself and now work as a cashier in a grocery store. I said to her that it bothers me that she complains about the customers not cleaning up after themselves because it is her job, not thiers to do this cleanup. I stated that it is the same as if I complained about customers not bagging their groceries and not putting them in the cart themselves...it is my job, it is expected by my employer for me to do it, it is a service that we offer, it is good customer service.I've explained to her that it is her job to clean the tables, expected from her employer and in her job description. The customer is a customer and when they go to a restaurant, they are expecting that their part is to pay and the staffs part is to serve, clean up and be friendly. I explained that if all the customers cleaned up after themselves then there would be less hours of work available. She says that it would not affect hours becuase there is so much else to do. I explained that yes it would because if the employer sees that staff is not needed for this task they will cut hours to save money and yes, there is a lot to do and this is not different...it is one of those things to do...it is one of those things that they hire people to do. She thinks that because it is fast food that the customer should clean up after themselves, unlike in a fancy restaurant. I say you chose to take the job knowing what was expected of you for a certain pay and it is your responsability to do the job happily and well the way that it is required for that pay (good work ethics) I believe that she can not see my point of view because she is a teenager working because she wants to for money she can spend however she wants and not working because she needs to support herself and or a family.
I hope this isn't too confusing to read...So, what do you think...who do you agree with?

I also said that if she feels justified in deciding this is the custoemrs responsability...what's next? Deciding that they have to cook the food, mop the floor and whipe out the toilets too! I don't know when she decided that she had the right to decide what her job was.
