Your opinion of the best singer of all time

No one's mentioned Helmut Lotti yet. Is there any style (or language) this Belgian cannot perform and excel in? A four octave range. Too bad he's not better known in the U.S.

yes and no.

i'm a huge Patton fan and while he's done a lot for his music i don't know how much i'd say he's done to spread that to the masses.

i'd say Freddie Mercury did more for bringing music (and an amazing voice) to the people.

i also think Chris Cornell had one of the best hard rock voices going while he was fronting Soundgarden.

Thom Yorke should at least be name dropped into this discussion as well. while the later Radiohead stuff colours everything with effects his vocal work on their early albums is definitely note worthy.

David Gray! I've just been listening to his music lately. It brings back memories.

I don't listen to lyrical music too much so it's hard to say really.

It's between these two;

Not a lot of love for many female vocalists eh?

I think there are some amazing ladies out there who I personally consider to have brilliant voices. Imogen Heap, Tori Amos, Annie Lennox...

Tim Buckley, probably the best singer ever in any genre.
If you don't believe me then listen to "Starsailor" and prepared be blown the **** back...

I disagree with that completely. Lennon started his first band in '57 and I've no doubts he was singing before he'd even heard of Bob Dylan. I doubt Lennon's voice was directly inspired by Dylans.

Brad Nowell is probably my favourite singer. His voice is superb and fit any time of music he and Sublime played. Maynard James Keenan, Otis Redding and John Lee Hooker are other favourites of mine.

Male - Nobody could touch Robert Plant in his prime. NOBODY. Honorable mentions go to Jeff Buckleys ridiculous range, and Russell Allen for being absolutely pitch perfect all the time and having an awesome voice that can be smooth or rough. Definitely an improvement over Symphony X's original vocalist in a big way.

Female - As much as I love Bjork, I have to admit there are a couple other vocalists I love just that little bit more. In particular, my all time favourite female vocalist is Ella Fitzgerald. NOBODY comes within a million miles of Ella for me.
