And why? PLEASE don't say Stephanie Meyer or JK Rowling or someone like that. (Not that I'm putting HP and Twilight in the same genre. God forbid.)
I know who Garth Nix is, I think he's pretty cool...he wrote Mr Monday and stuff, right? I read that =D
Anyway, I'm not a fan of Jane Austen, sorry.

Whoever wrote the book of Ecclesiastes in the bible (I think it was solomon but nobody knows). Second to that would be Douglas Adams, closely followed by Arthur C. Clarke or Orson Scott Card (I like sci fi).

mine is Robert A. Heinlein I have been reading & rereading his books since I was a kid and that's been a day or two :)

I can't decide between Douglas Adams and John Green. Both are fantastic writers and have different writing styles, so it's hard to choose. I love Douglas Adams' A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - it's sci-fi, but still funny; and I love John Green's books too.

Helen Fielding is one of my favorite authors. She wrote the Bridget Jones books and Olivia Joules. She also write Cause Celeb, but I haven't read that one yet.

The reason for this is that she has created strong female characters, that also show the silliness of women. Her books are funny and I think every woman can relate to them.

garth nix. you have probably never heard of him, but he's australian and writes AMAZING fantasy novels. the keys to the kingdom series is probably the best, but the old kingdom trilogy is also very good. they are a little weird and very very fantastical, usually quite complicated with lots of different characters and sub-plots, and some of the characters takes a while to understand, as not all of them are human or anything we can relate to. but they are good.

Cornelia Funke.
She's a really great writer and not many people know much about her. Her Inkheart Trilogy is probably almost just as good as Harry Potter. (However Harry Potter will always win =D)
It's really interesting and has a really great plot. A person who can read people in and out of stories at will while reading.
