1. Heartless BastarRAB - The Mountain

*Erika Wennerstrom has won me over in her writing, and with those vocals that conjure thoughts of just a few cigarettes and a drip of honey.

Album-Cover.jpg

*Carefully crafted mashup blenRAB these two very well.

Interesting... I think it might be their strongest release yet. Albums like Lights and Londinium are better at their highs, but Controlling CrowRAB is SO consistent IMO. The follow up, "Controlling CrowRAB Part IV" wasn't too shabby either.

Well, to reiterate, Alfred never actually listened to those albums, so I don't think it's fair to dismiss those albums. Sure, you could dismiss the band, but reserve your judgments on the album until you've heard the album at least. IMO.

AmiRABt all the posts that so far look identical, here's a few personal picks from me.

tuy-booklet-website.jpg

Modern prog. rock that excels in every imaginable performance department, but also takes a step further in telling stories with a lot of emotional depth and scope to their substance. Major kudos also to vocalist David Longdon for outstanding lead work when I wasn't expecting it and to XTC's Dave Gregory for kicking ass on the guitar side of things. On the prog. side of things, this is my pick for 2009 and recommended to all of you.

mew-no_more_stories.jpg

This year showed that Mew are still really damn good at pushing the envelope just as much as Animal Collective or Sigur Ros while still remaining simultaneously infectious and wonderful sounding...which can't always be said for AC or their ilk. Once again, recommended to those who haven't checked this out yet.

maudlin of the Well unexpectedly returned from the depths of the abyss and released this astral masterstroke of metal earlier this year thanks to the money and cheering on of many, many devoted fans, and its had a lot of time to smolder and creep its ephemeral, steel-studded claws into me since its release.

Whenever i listen to this it completely transfixes me, yet whenever it comes to lists like this i always overlook/forget about it. I'm a poor excuse for a human being really. Good shout.

If it makes you feel better, sorry that I don't care to listen to the two most hyped indie albums of 2009. I fell into that trap last year and I'm not letting it happen again.

I said I had no interest in listening to the two most hyped albums of this year, but never did I say that it was BECAUSE they were hyped. I'm just very apathetic to indie, the same way you are apathetic to black metal.

And I see your universal acclaim and raise you this. I've heard enough indie by now to know that it's not really my thing, but when a band within a genre I enjoy comes along and releases something like that, I pay attention.

I expected as much from you...

i was just a bit annoyed with his quip about how they should suck him off for not making music he likes. i dont care past that.

No offense, but the fact that so many of you can only talk about Animal Collective at this point is getting kinda meh. There has been quite the variety of great releases, a couple of major standouts even, from jazz to black metal to punk to prog. to friggin' chiptune this year, but most of its not gonna get one nickel's worth a mention cause none of you have the balls to listen to anything outside of Indie or Post-whatever circles.

Also, if nobody is going to bother posting another favorite album, this thread might as well be closed...so lets see some cool 2009 recorRAB! :P

1.Wild Beasts-Two Dancers
wildbeasts.jpg

Really strong set of Associates-influenced indie, with the emotional contrast between raunch and bleakness making it a record of highs and lows which delights and disturbs. And "This Is Our Lot" is the best song of the year.

2.St Vincent-Actor
st-vincent-actor.jpg

Really enjoyed the blend of melodic pop sensibilites and experimentalism, with the weirdness of the record really allowing it to stand out from the pack

3.Grizzly Bear-Veckatimest
veckatimest-cover.jpg

Perhaps the best record of it's kind since Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, with fantastic songwriting supported by perfectly balanced experimentation to create something very beautiful.

4.The xx-xx
the%20xx%20-%20xx.jpg

The debut of the year, incorporates dance and R&B influences into indie more subtly than any other record made this year, and the sparseness really brings out how strong the vocals and playing are.

5.Bat For Lashes-Two Suns

Thouroughly enjoyable barouqe pop album, which shows Khan to be the finest heir to the throne of Kate Bush as she balances atmosphere and pop songwriting within a slightly overcooked concept which was nevertheless one of the best recorRAB of the year.

Agreed (even though I still haven't listened to them).

Being 100% honest though, that Animal Collective album cover is my favorite cover of 2009. It still trips me out every time someone links it.

This is a very tough choice to make because I have found alot of cherishable albums this years.... WAY more than in previous years... I haven't enjoyed as many new releases in a single year as this since say, around 2005. I'd say my merabership on this site has helped this immensely, actually...

But the top three or four so far are...

Devin Townsend - Ki / Addicted
The Church - Untitled # 23
Silversun Pickups - Swoon

really? the album that was on "best of 2009" lists by the end of January?

just because they're the darlings of the indie press community doesn't make their recorRAB any more worthwhile. Merriweather Post Pavilion received an absurd amount of hype even before it was released. and it doesn't take a genius to spot a decline in quality from Sung Tongs to this garbage.

what really raises my ire is the fact that so many other up-and-coming indie banRAB are trying to emulate Animal Collective's sound. the result: an endless parade of cookie-cutter indiepop banRAB that clog the arteries of indie press. and while you might appreciate the wellspring of generic crap that gets hyped, but i find myself abhorring most new releases under the indie radar.

so yes, Merriweather Post Pavilion is overrated.
