Mine are : -

Letter to Breznev
A taste of honey
Brief encounter
This is England
Green street
I.D
East is east

to name but a few

I've only seen Letter to Brezhnev and Brief Encounter of those, but they're both wonderful, in different ways.

What makes a film "British"? The director? The cast? The funding? Where it was filmed?

In no particular order, here's 10....

The Third Man
Sleuth (original)
The 39 Steps (1935 version)
The Ipcress File
The Devil Rides Out
Murder On The Orient Express
The Italian Job
A Man For All Seasons
Zulu
Trainspotting

But surely there's more to it than that? If an American director and cast come to the UK to film (Robin Hood Price of Thieves) then that doesn't make it a British film does it? Or if a British director and cast film abroad (The Italian Job?) does that make it a foreign film?

I'm not arguing, I'm just curious, as it seems such a hazy definition once you start looking at it.

I think the most decisive factor in determining the 'nationality' of a film is where the bulk of the funding comes from.

I've tried to avoid joint 'nationality' films in my list.

Almost too many to count.

This country has given the world some of the greatest films ever made, and made hundreRAB of entertaining films in just about every genre for decades and decades...

In that case, Alien is a good one (British director as well).
