You have to listen to this

Your use of the word "obsession" scares me. I'm still in denial about my musical addiction. I have this fear of waking up some morning in a shabby hotel room with hangover and the sound of Barry Manilow blasting in my ears on an iPod. That's when I'll finally hit rock bottom with all this musical madness.

Is that really Mandy playing? Now that I'm officially in hell will somebody kill me?

I think 4ZZZ articulated my thoughts on the album quite well, but I came away from it with a much less positive stance because it isn't really my style.

I would call it a nice album, some of the arrangements are quite pretty, and it definitely works well as a cohesive whole, crafting continuous atmosphere throughout.

But for me, a lot of the time it really strayed too close to easy listening ambience, pleasant but there wasn't much that really engaged me. Similarly, the stylistic unity of the songs makes them bleed together and I'm left with a bunch of vague impressions and no real concrete memories of the album. Which I suppose might be the aim of some ambient music, but it doesn't appeal to me.

Additionally, the vocals on the album are very poor, just prominent enough to snag my attention, but ultimately unsatisfying. Two, Three, Fall is a perfect example, the acoustic guitar is good but the vocals are far too faint and breathy.

Maybe I'm just being a lazy listener, because as 4ZZZ said, there is a lot of complex layered arrangements which I'm only taking at face value. If I sat down with a good pair of headphones and gave it my full attention to catch all the nuances it might start to grow on me. But as it is, I don't think I'm going to give it the chance.

Cell Scape is probably their best known but they have tones of E.P's out that are well worth checking out. Holler if you can't find any as I have a fair bit.

Have a couple of Zero 7 albums and quite like them but Mum are a name that I have heard a lot but never got around to checking out. They are not another Sigur Ros clone though are they?

Alright well I'm nearing the end of my initial listen, and overall I enjoyed it. I can legitimately say I've never heard anything really of this particular style or genre. I'll also agree with 4ZZZ that this is definitely a mood album, but that doesn't diminish its impact or beauty.

With the constant introduction of new instruments or effects, I never really found myself bored with the album. I don't really think it fully hits its stride until the third song though, Patron Saint for Troubled Men. Up until that point I was kind of hesitant with the first two tracks, but that was the point where the album got my attention, and it never really let go after that. Phantom Rings is weird in a completely kickass way. I loved the minute and a half interlude-track Welsh Harp. The album enRAB with a major bang too, with the distorted Hand of Reign and the applicably titled Sung Into Your Brightening Skull.

I enjoyed the first playthrough of this one, but it definitely feels like one that will take several listens for it to finally click. At the moment though I'd give it a 7/10. The Mice Parade gets a 9/10, I'm enjoying that one a little too much I think. Looking forward to the next one.

I'm kinda confused how this works. I want to review the first album..Where do I find it? Can I download it anywhere? Can I review it even though it was posted to months ago? =/ Do I post the review here?

Helpwould be appreciated. I'm ready to dabble in music reviewing...and I'd rather not start with my favorite album like I was going to for fear of getting made fun of

Melt Banana blow me away and I was only listening to them testerday when I took a stroll. The vocals are an acquired taste though. I just love the energy and bollocks to commercialism stance they have! enjoy (or maybe not lol):

Which Volta do Mar album would you suggest to a fan of Faraquet? They've been on my radar a while but nothing's pushed me to actually check out one of their albums.

First thing that's worth mentioning is that there isn't enough good music out there made by people called Alex, so I'm glad I came across this :D

In short, I loved this album. The old freak folk description was quite an apt description. The guy is a wonderful folk guitarist, creating some really vivid sonic pictures with his finger-picking style, which are given even more colour by the occasional use the harp and mandolin. He even throws some heavy distortion into the mix on tracks like Hand Of Reign. His voice has very ethereal quality about it too (kinda weird when you think about how he fronted hardcore banRAB in his early career), and gives the music that much more of a ghostly edge.

All in all, a very colourful and atmospheric album. My highlights at this early stage would probably be Of Late and the Patron Saint Of Troubled Men.

Thanks for this Lee :thumb:
