You grew up in the same generation as me. You should know this stuff.

Damn it. My friends can't do SHIT on computers! I tried telling two of my friends how to do the SIMPLEST thing over AIM and they just didn't have the capacity to do it.

What we were doing was this: Theres an Audio recorder called Audacity and when you record stuff, it automatically saves it as an Audacity file. And when it's an .aud file, it comes with a bunch of other crap and its annoying. We were trying to Export the files as mp3s rather than .aud files.

But in order to do that, you need to download a program called LAME, and all you need is ONE file. Then you try to export it, it will ask you for the file, and you can be on your way to exporting .aud as .mp3 files. AND LET ME TELL YOU, I did it less than 2 minutes. No problems at all.

I mean seriously. It's not fucking hard. At all. And they are the same age as me, they get around the same grades, but they still don't fucking know how to do this stuff. Windows XP, not hard, people.

It took me about an hour for each person until I finally gave up. One of them I went over to his house and did it in a snap. I gave up on the other one. I'll go over there soon, but I've been so busy lately.

But it just amazes me. I feel more annoyed than the computer school snippets person.

Welcome to the real world.

Do you know how often I get told that xxxx video card is the latest and greatest because the fucker at CompUSA said so? When in fact that card is 6 years old and costs less than $20 at New Egg?

And that's just the shit I hear every day from my customers who "know about computers". Yeah, they know not to stick their dick in them and that's about it.

Your friends are fucking stupid. Although, it is hard for people to understand what your telling them to do. I tried to explan to my friends how to plug in their microphone. They couldn't do it. Easier in rl.

I feel your frustration. I'm one of the very few people in my circle of friends who grasps the general concept of computers. As such, I'm the designated tech person of the group. Fine and dandy, except for my lack of patience. I usually end up calling them a dumbass and giving up.

No matter what the subject, whether it's computers, or math, or financial analysis, some folks get it almost through osmosis, and some folks don't. Welcome to real life.

If you are one of the lucky (or educated) ones to understand the subject, chances are you can go from Step A to Step C on auto-pilot. The clueless need to know what Step B is.

And folks learn in different ways. Some can take verbal instructions, others need to see it in writing, or use pictures. Others need to be shown. When you're telling two people the same thing, you may need to say it in different ways for each of them.

I went to a beginning computer class with my mom (as moral support). The instructor told the class to click on an icon with the mouse. Half the class picked up their mouse and aimed it at the monitor. They weren't stupid, they just didn't understand the unspoken step about how to move the mouse.

I think a good way to explain it is that some people are afraid to try to learn this stuff. My dad works at a GMC dealer working on cars. He remembers every fail code that the cars cpu can spit out at you, but when I told him that he doesn't need to use AOL to get internet, he just couldn't grasp it. I realy didn't know much about computers for a long time, I did the whole dos thing, then lost a PC to the flood of 93 and realy didn't use a pc till a few years ago. I had to teach myself this stuff, but I didn't find it hard. My dad is afaid of the laptop he has. I tryed to get him to hook up a web cam, but he said there was no way he could figure it out.

I think its more about how much time people are willing to invest into learning about something. If you care about something, you can learn it. I hate sports, I don't care what the difference between a dubble header and a safty is, but people that want me to play can't understand what my problem is.

to each his own.

I hate helping people out with computers. I do everything myself.

If they're three feet away, fucking take the mouse from them. If they need more 'tard help I go AFK.

And UberSkippy - ROFL at the dick comment!

That's why you go to the people who know what you don't when you need help. So someone doesn't know some things about computers. So fucking what? I'm sure there's a lot of knowledge you lack that you may need someday, that doesn't make you retarded. People learn about what interests them and not everyone in any generation as the same interests.

If you don't like helping people with their computer stuff, don't do it. Buy them an instruction guide for xmas. Tell them to get some lessons. Whatever. But don't act or feel superior because you have some knowledge they don't. I'm sure they're better at something than you are.

There's nothing hard about following simple instructions. I'm not sure if people are just too lazy to listen to you when you tell them to do something or if they're just born mentally retarded.

The problem is that the general populace is completely devoid of common sense. If something isn't immediately apparent to them, they're lost and bewildered. And since it's so much easier to just have someone do it for them, rather than ask how to do it for themselves and actually pay attention, or god forbid put a little effort into the task at hand, these idiots will never learn anything aside from what they learn by rote.

People who can't operate computers, and make no effort to understand them, really annoy me. It's not like they're hard to use; I'm not asking you to write a sorting algorithm, but I would like to to comprehend how to open a web browser and check your email. Especially if it's something you're required to do on daily basis.

Hm. Well I am lucky enough where most of my friends can understand what I try to tell them about computers, or they already know. For those who can't understand the simpilist of things (Like the prince =His nickname= -my brother-) They should just stay the hell away from computers before they get a virus or something, like, yet again, my brother did. =.=''
