You can put 87/regular gas in a 06 honda accord V6 right?

i have a 2001 vw vr6 and for a while i was having issues being underpowered and having bad fuel miliage when i first got it this car is set up for 91 octane i didnt know it. look on the inside of the fuel door the may be a tag in there saying what octane to run or in the manual run that octane no less, more wont hurt the car but your just burning extra monies

I was wondering because someone told me I should be using at least 89/ mid grade, whats recommended?
