The assumption is that you might want it on Bluray.
If you want the film on dvd and never intend to upgrade then its money well spent.
But if you buy the dvd when there is a Bluray option is IS money down the drain because only rare or deleted titles get anything these days .
My collection of dvd's to sell is growing as my Blurays increase but the dvd's are so worthless now I'm going to keep them for about 10 years and hopefully sell them as curiosities like Laserdiscs were

I didn't say I was an expert in the subject of 'blu ray'. And I wasn't saying upscaling makes dvd quality just as good as blu ray quality.

Your saying that makes me think you are the one without decent equipment. I had a good,
I had Panasonic crt's for many years then I had an early PS3 and currently have a 250Gb PS3 Slim along with a fully multiregion Panasonic Bluray player and a full hd 1080p lcd tv so my equipment is up to spec.
I've been buying dvd since late 1997 so I have a fair few but the notion they are on par with Bluray is nonsense
Side by side comparison of the very worst Bluray still blows the dvd out of the water.
The most disappointing Bluray I've had this year is the US Blu of Spartacus but it still beats the Criterion dvd - just not as much as it should which is down to the overzealous noise reduction apparent on many Universal Blurays.
Not sure how you are able to find anywhere that charges 3 times the price of a dvd for Bluray.
I usually pay less for a US import Bluray than the price for the UK dvd and if I opt for the UK Blu its usually

Doesn't this really depend on the type of film? I mean, if I were to watch Sideways, then the story is a more important thing than the visual aspect of the film, so maybe a film like that on DVD would suffice, but if I were to watch something like Avatar, then the visual experience would warrant the need for a Bluray disc and player. For me, and depending on the type of film and the importance of the visual experience of that film, I'd snap at the three DVRAB rather than the one Bluray.

There are some films where the HD improvement is not really an issue but those are the films I'm likely to rent .
If there is a Bluray option I would never get the dvd.
If the film is not that important then I'll rent it- usually on Bluray.

All of my blu-ray purchases are either in the action or thriller catgories. I can't see the point in buying a Mike Leigh film in blu-ray unless the price difference is not great!
