You brought the dvd but wish you had the blu-ray instead!

So it looks to me by reading the previous posts that most people will still buy the blu-ray over the dvd even if they hadn't seen the film before and is more expensive?
 
That's not true. For example, The Crow is apparently worse on blu ray compared to the special edition dvd that was released whenever it came out.



Blu ray players upscale dvRAB, so there is nothing wrong with still watching and buying dvRAB for certain films. There is no point really if you buy a blu ray player and never buy a blu ray to play on it.
 
Bluray players may upscale dvd's but they don't make them look any better than they have done before - upscaling simply makes them acceptable quality on HD ready tv's.

I buy dvd's of certain films too but these are films that have only just come out on dvd or maybe a Bluray release is unlikely or a long way off.

For brand new films buying the dvd is money down the drain.
If there is a Bluray option you should always take it

It's like buying a cd player then continuing to by vinyl or cassettes
 
First you state a fact -"That's not true" , then you admit you don't really know - "apparently".:rolleyes:

While some Blurays could be better there's not a Bluray on the market that would look worse in a side by side comparison with its dvd counterpart
 
Of coarse most will. Why spend out on a HDTV and Blu Ray player to then just buy SD films on DVD?
I don't get this more expensive argument as before Blu Ray came along DVRAB were the same price as the most expensive Blu Rays. Most Blu Ray releases you can get between
 
You say Apparently, so you haven't seen for yourself then?
Others also said that Gladiator was a poor transfer and no better than the DVD.
I'm glad I didn't take any notice of what some had said because it was a brilliant transfer.

The not true was for overall, not just The Crow. I read reviews on people who compared the formats for the film, are they lying? Or not worth getting on blu ray and so on if you have the dvd already.

And I know what the upscaling does thanks(you have mentioned already under a different account on here...). Makes them acceptable quality yes, so it's somewhat better. :rolleyes:

I will get the blu-ray if l seen the film before. but, in my opinion, it's a risk to spend more on a film if l haven't seen!

Up to now, there's only one film l bought on dvd that l wish l had it on blu-ray instead!

Have anyone seen the blu-ray of 'Triangle'? I have the dvd of this film and can't believe how good is the quality of the disc and, to my mind, the blu-ray has to be exceptional to beat the dvd!

I agree with the pricing of blu-rays at HMV. I was in one store this week and the new releases were

Each to their own I suppose, but that seems a daft way of doing things as you then end up spending more if you buy the DVD first, like the film and then decide you will buy the Blu Ray when you could of just got the Blu Ray in the first place and saved the cost of the DVD.

It's still only SD though and the Blu Ray will be HD so should be better.
Have you seen the difference in quality between the DVD and Blu Ray of Avatar?
 
I'm still quite happy to buy DVD's, depending on how much I'm saving compared to the Blu-Ray releases. I wouldn't pay more than a fiver or so extra just to have a film on Blu-Ray, when the DVD still offers good quality picture and sound. However, if getting the Blu-Ray means paying
 
I never buy new releases these days because it doesn't matter if it's on Blu or DVD, you're basically throwing money away by doing so.

I'm still DVD only as I don't like paying more than a few quid per movie really, there is literally nothing that is new I can't wait a few extra months for. Once this DVD player packs in yeah I'll switch to Blu and if I see cheap Blu-rays then maybe I'll pick them up but long gone are the days when I would fork out
 
This is very true, blu-rays are coming down in price, and a lot quicker than when DVRAB were first released. I just think it is great that you don't have the choices of back then. You couldn't buy a DVD player and buy which ever was cheaper, you had to make the choice Video or DVD and risk the possibility of having to buy them again when the tech war was over.

This time, you can buy a Blu-ray player and stick with DVRAB since the technology will never prevent you from using the DVRAB you bought in the past.
 
Indeed. :) I can't see myself going to the hassle and expense of upgrading all my existing DVD's to Blu-Ray any time soon, when they have already cost me an arm and a leg. Thankfully that won't be necessary for the reasons you've given.
 
Don't know why people bring up money down the drain, if you like the film(and dvd isn't rubbish quality), and you are not bothered about selling it once finished, it's not a waste in that sense at all.

I never buy a film thinking about the resale price but I'm also not going to fork out the money they ask when they are newly released these days because I know they'll mostly be dirt cheap not too far down the line.
 
No point is there.

It's why I always laugh when people start talking about DVD's being worthless and you may as well use them for coasters. They aren't exactly worthless if it's a film you want and never had any intention of selling on in the first place.
