You are not a member of the armed forces, and therefor not required to. Tell him that you aren't obligated to, he shouldn't need to validate himself or his rank by demanding your respect, and that you respectfully decline. If he persists, refer him to your supervisor.
I would take it to your supervisor even before he did.
