Yet Another Spongey Thread: Too Many Songs?

Ever since 2005, SpongeBob episodes have been loaded with songs. I think it is a sign of weakness. What do you think? Do you like the singing? Or is it just a bit too much?

Actually, I kind of like some of songs. Sure, a few of them are annoying, but songs like "The Campfire Song Song" and "Sweet Victory" were funny.

Yeah the songs from Seasons 1-3 were either in the show for a purpose or were just downright entertaining. But when we reached Dunces and Dragons and heard mediocre lyrics from Squidward for half an hour, I knew we had hit a different (and unfortunately lower) level of entertainment.

Edit: An exception must be made for Season Five's "I Wrote This." Pure. Genius.

Interestingly, "Sweet Victory" wasn't actually written for the show. It is a stock piece from the Associated Production Music library. It just happened to fit the mood of that scene, so it was used.

Anyway, songs on SpongeBob can be a mixed bag. Some I like ("Hey All You People", "Ripped Pants", "F.U.N."), some I don't ("Without You", "The Very First Christmas", "He's Flying", "All You Need is Friendship", "The Best Day Ever").

That's a reasonable assumption. Writers do on many occasions have trouble filling eleven minutes. What better way to drag out a scene than to throw in a musical number?

They know there are too many songs in Spongebob. Today's new episode even pointed that out when a background character stopped Spongebob from singing.

I quoted myself. Weird. But anyway, I changed my mind. I actually did like "Gary Come Home", if that's what it was called, from "Have You seen This Snail?".

The songs from the earlier days of Spongebob are among the finest ever to have emerged from a Nicktoon (Ripped Pants, Sandy's Texas Song, Doin' The Sponge, and most especially The F.U.N. Song), and even some of the middling songs like "Very First Christmas" and "Underwater Sun" have the proper spirit and catchiness.

The Songs in the "Lost epiosde", however, are surpirsingly trite, and I guess that's where the downward spiral starts.

Meh

I really like some of the catchy songs like "Campfire Song Song", "Shoe Tying song", the "Jellyfishing song" and "F.U.N" and sometimes hear others sing it in the most embarassing of places and other sing it with them. Then there are the songs that are just full of win like "Sweet Victory", "Ripped Pants", and that one song where . Actually I love "Sweet Victory" and it is a great song to play in an arena or right before a game. Then there are the stupid songs fortunately I never actually heard them.
