Yet another debaffle !

Went out today and bought the hole saws, arbor and dowel for the debaffle.... and drilled out my baffles. Super easy and worked like charm... just like the video shows. It sounds a LOT better than I imagined... I was scared it would be too loud but not so.

I see 'mickey' up there now but he is gonna haveta wait until I ride a bit and see how I like it so far. It is still a bit hollow sounding at idle for my taste...but otherwise the sound is terrific... :-)

Diamond Jim's fibrosleeve will be next, I think, and then, if that is still not quite perfect for me I will try demickeying. If THAT doesnt sound right, then its cobra pipe time I guess... :)

Thanks to all for the encouragement to do it....:-)... it sounds a lot better and it is not too loud for residential neighborhoods at all.... one of my neighbors even came by to see and commented on how they liked the sound !
 
Cool. It's amazing what an intangible thing (sound) can be to a bike. Great sound makes such a difference.

If you try the fibrosleeves, let me know how it turns out. For me, I had the same experience of satisfaction when I went to fibrosleeves as i did when I went from stock to debaffle. It makes such a difference.
 
did a hundred mile run today and really love the sound. Had frank fire it up while I was in the starbucks and it sounds deep and not too loud. Goin out now to buy the Fibrosleeve stuff... ;)
 
no... havent noticed that... but then I only ride on weekends lately...going out now so I will test this and let you know....
 
ps... having some trouble doing a fibrosleeve... all the metal mesh I find seems to not be springy enough... lol... have had a couple attempts come sliding out the muffler :-)

not ready to plead for Diamond Jim's help yet... I am gonna figure this out...LOL

Ha ha. I've now made about 8 sets of fibrosleeves and have taken them in and out so many times doing other mods. So I know what you are talking about. Are you rolling it first around a spray can and then again around something a little smaller in diameter? If you either skip the paint can roll step or use something too small in diameter for the second roll then you will reduce the springiness too much. When properly rolled and wrapped with the fiberglass, they should be just small enough to slide in. It should be a snug, tight fit when you are sliding them in and then when you let go all springiness is then exerted outward. Try using something that's maybe 2 1/2" diameter for the second roll. I've had to do this when I reused fiberglass and it has become more compressed.
 
ok... after another 200 mi ride I can say I am pretty sure there is no change in power...but I dont crank the throttle that much anyway. I am thinking I get much better mileage tho! I got 49 mi per gallon on this tank...and I have never gotten that much before... usually 44 to 46 range...but never 49... thinking this mod has changed my mileage significantly.
 
May I ask what is the fibrosleeve you're referring to and what's its purpose?
All I've done so far is remove the rear baffles.

yeah I followed your directions but I cannot find springy enough mesh.... my hardware / Lowes places only carry huge openings versions of your masonary mesh... I found 'hardware cloth' at one place but it turned out to be aluminum and not springy enough... then I tried SS mesh from a big strainer but of course that had almost no spring as it is a true woven mesh. I am goin hardware shopping after work a few times this week and have some friends looking for the right stuff for me now... so I should find it soon.
I do hope it reduces the volume just a bit at speed... rode with a friend yesterday and he says my bike is pretty dang loud from behind at 60 mph or so.....:bluethum:
 
I done the drilling the baffles and i wasn't pleased i wanted more so i done the debaffle thing and no i wasn't pleased i wanted more then i done the demikey thing, and i hated the sound. It sounded like a old honda with straight pipes.Then i read about the fibrosleeve so i done it and love the sound deep and mellow i bought the packing at a local suzuki bike shop for about ten dollars which i believe it is ceramic wool.I'm leaving it alone now i finally have the sound ive been searching for.
 
You now have that unique sound that I bet turns heads no matter what kind of other bikes are around. Last bike night I went to was a first time in the next town over. I pulled in, parked and let it run another 15 seconds before turning it off. Owners, from harleys to hondas, gravitated to my bike like moths to a light wondering what the heck I was on. They had never seen a bike like it and certainly never heard a bike sound like it. To my knowledge, my M is the only one that's been sold within maybe a 40 miles circle around where I live. I love it. :bluethum:
 
No, you want steel. I just wanted to be sure you had steel. Is it in a diamond-shaped pattern? You'll want to cut it and roll it with the points of the diamond pattern in line with the pipes- the points should follow the length of the pipes.
