First off, though well-intentioned, the above person's "old remedy" won't do a darn thing, I'm just being honest. If you live in the house with someone who has lice, there's probably a 90% chance at least that you too will get lice. The two keys to you not getting them is #1: you mother getting rid of them and QUICK, and #2 you not touching, leaning on, using anything your mother has used, sat on, etc. Don't share clothes, seating (until she has no more lice and all's been sprayed with anti-lice spray), have her wash all her garments and bedding, pillows etc. in HOT water. If it doesn't survive hot water, say goodbye to it. The other alternative if hot water will ruin fabric is to have her tightly tie fabric things (stuffed animals, pillows, whatever you fear would not survive a hot water wash cycle) into plastic garbage bags and tie them TIGHTLY for TWO WEEKS TIME without opening, the lice will be dead in that time (this is what they do in schools when there is a lice infestation, they take all play-clothes, stuffed animals etc., and bag them tightly for 2 weeks). Lice can even be transferred by sitting back against a car seat where Mom sat, so don't forget to spray car seats and rugs and allow to dry before getting back in the car. Using the lice shampoo AND carefully combing/picking EACH tiny nit (egg) off your mother's hair shaft is essential for her to actually get rid of them. Killing the lice is not enough, the shampoo does not kill each egg, and once they hatch (every 2 days) she will have them again unless all eggs are removed. You can help her with this, if you have great eyesight. Part her hair in rows and section off, and carefully go over each section of hair with a fine tooth comb, combing from scalp TO END. The nits will be attached to the hair shaft about a half an inch from the scalp, they look like a tiny shiny brownish dot and are very easy to miss, so you must be careful and do it in bright lighting.
I am a hairdresser, and my children not once but TWICE came home from school with head lice (I heard over 85% of their school system had it, how gross!). We washed, bagged, or sprayed every fabric item in our entire house to get rid of them.... even things in their closets, linen, bedding, clothes folded in drawers. We put everything in bags into the garage, and one by one took each bag in to wash and put back in the drawers, closets, etc. It took us 2 weeks each time to really be sure we were rid of them. And each time, EVERYONE around us ended up wtih the lice, too.... my mother, my mother in law, everyone who was around our kids. It is so super easy to catch. You must wash, wash, wash, and be persistent, checking the heads of people who've been around your mother, as they too can give it back to her and the cycle can go on and on it's like a nightmare! You have to be vigilant and do not miss ANY article of fabric that she comes into contact with!
Sorry to give you bad or scary sounding news, but I'm being honest and I have dealt with this not once but twice, not to mention what I've seen as a hairdresser!
Good luck!
