Yearly recurring sore (strep) throat. Why?

I am seventeen years old. For as long as I can remember, I've had to go to the doctor 1-4 times per year because of strep throat or a related issue. Since Monday morning I've had that familiar hard-to-swallow throat ache and this time, it's accompanied with a rough, dry cough. If I exhale too quickly after inhaling it also makes me cough. There have also been times where I've been sick with symptoms aside from my throat, but not at this time, besides an occasional fever.

Tuesday morning I had the white chunks in the sides and back of my throat. When I picked them off they had a horrible smell/taste, and left craters in my throat, like they were burrowed inside of my throat.
Every morning since (today is thursday), I cough up hard mucous that has formed which sometimes has hints of blood in it. I haven't yet gone to the doctor because this happens to me so often. Maybe I should?

My major question is: Is there a reason I have such a weakness in my throat area, and is there something I can do about it?

I've had a tonsil removal consultation, and considered doing it, but haven't looked into making an appointment. I was told that tonsils are only an area where pain will center, and that getting them removed may just move the inflammation somewhere else.

I'd like to know if there is a supplement I should be getting more of each day, like vitamin C. Or if there is something else I should be doing in my daily life to prevent this from happening to me so often.
If anyone has ever heard of a similar case to mine, please share with me anything you think might help me.
I won't want to have to miss several days at a time of work or college in the next year or so when I become an adult. I feel like this is a disadvantage to me whenever it happens.

Definitely sounds like you need to have your tonsils out. The chunks are probably tonsil stones and there is no cur for that except to remove the tonsils.

If you are getting strep thoat often, it is possible someone close to you is a carrier of strep. They may not feel sick but is getting you sick. My friend's daughter kept getting strep. It turned out her friend was a carrier and once treated with anitbiotics stopped it. I just had a conversation today with a friend whose daughter has been sick. They found out today her boyfriend was the carrier. He had no symptoms.

This sounds quite feasible. The carrier is not affected but affects other susceptible to the infection. But there is surely remedy. Find a doctor who will help to get your whole family and a few close friends/relatives checked, to find out if there are any carriers. < edited >
