yamaha xj750 (1982) universal joint knackered?

The universal joint of the shaft has eaten itself!, im going to try and replace it with a new one. Ive been told that it is possible to do without removing the swingarm. Removing the swing arm complicates things, i havent got tons of hours to spare so what do we think? is it possible to remove the universal joint and spline without removing the swingarm, already got back wheel and bevel compartment off by the way
 
Get a service manual before you start. This way you will know the correct way to replace the part.

With a service manual you won't need to depend on strangers on the Internet for your repair procedures. You won't need to decide if this information from these strangers is correct or just a bunch of B.S.
 
i had to do this with a vmax of mine once.the uj was ok but strangely enough,one of the bevel gears,the back shaft of the one that sticks out of the back of the engines shaft snapped,which bolts to the uj.you'll have to remove the swingarm,it shouldn't be too difficult,but get yourself a factory manual.
