Yamaha XJ550 won't start?

I have a Yamaha XJ550 that runs great...when it starts. Sometimes it will start right up with no problems, but other days NOTHING happens. There is no clicking, nothing. I verified that the battery and fuse are good, and since the problem occurs randomly I think it might be a loose wire somewhere? Any suggestions? All other electrical runs great. Thanks.
I have not tested the starter yet, how do I go about doing that? I want to check if the starter is bad, or if there is just a bad connection. All wires looked secure so I might have to open the starter box.

start by checking the starter button then start tracing wire shitty job but what else are you going to do

brushes in starter are bad or starter no good have you tested it yet?

Things to check: Bad wiring, corroded connections, insulation damaged & shorting out. Starter solenoid. Starter switch. Charging system. Battery condition.
