YAMAHA VIRAGO 750 1981: ANY MOTORCYCLE MACHANICS OUT THERE?

this is my first virago 750. it has 13.000 miles on it. and i dont know a whole lot about motors. my problem is, when i start it up, about every 10 seconds theres a puff coming out from the mufflers, enough to blow out a zippo lighter flame. second problem: while riding, when i get to a comfortable speed (in any gear) the motor seems to pulsate...like im giving it a little gas and then letting off. but when i give it gas to speed up, the motor runs great, theres no miss or pulsating. i just bought this bike, and i changed the spark plugs thinking this will make it run like a top...it still puffs out every 10 seconds when ideling while parked, and pulsates when i get to a comfortable gear for the speed limit. i took it for a five mile ride yesterday, and when i shut the motor off "it back fired!, like a fire cracker in the muffler. does anyone know what i need to do to fix this problem?
 
Sounds like the pilot circuit in one of your carbs is clogged up, have the carbs ever had any attention. Check into the carbs and do the basic maintenance such as, plugs, airfilter, and valve adjust also.
