xbox live private chat problem?

me and my friend both have open nat types, no parental controls... i can speak to everyone on private chat except him, and we cant join each others game invites.. does anyone know what the problem could be and how to solve it?
oh yeah and when i accept his private chat invite it just says "joining chat" and the after about 5 seconds disappears
and both our mics work.....
