X6 : Possibly the best Nokia til date My Review

possibly the best nokia yet.

first off, design. there are actual gray metal benzel that run around the edge of the phone. It looks like a 700 dollar phone.
the material of the back cover, although it is plastic is very soft, and width and weight of the phone feels 'just right' in your hand. compared to having a droid before this, which is a big block of metal, this feels so much more wanting to holding in your hands.
This is a fashion phone IMO whose purpose is to still provide entertainment functions.
IT has Hard buttons on the button ! that override any other task. THIS is the biggest feature i have been wanting in Android. You see if your running a lot of task and need to make a call quickly the phone gets stuck in processing. with the physical hard buttons, getting to the telephone screen is instant whether your running 10 or 100 apps.
good solid nokia craftmanship and build quality.
I thought i would be kicking myself from going from a 3.7 incher to a 3.2 incher but the screen and resolution on the x6 is very good for reading and broswing. THe 3.5G is very fast as well.
BUT the most important thing I CAN TELL you that where this X6 OUTDOES any android smartphone or iphone out there is;
CALL QUALITY AND RECEPTION are typical nokia strengths and this phone 's strongest point and the fact that you have a battery the size of a droid in a small lighter form factor means this willl LAST you the entire day or so.
Every android phone so far x10, droid, etc sure compared to nokias.
Basically , For me MY experience has been that EVERY NOKIA I have owned has CONSISTENTLY has good call quality and reception. but of all the android phones x10a, droid, hd2 etc phones , the call quality and reception have all been hit or miss etc

SO Yah , awesome job nokia !

I have to agree with you on the X6 call quality. My blackberry 9700 would have bad call quality where as my ladys X6 would have better reception than me and we're standing next to each other. One of my biggest grip with the X6 is the low ram. 128mb ram is not enough to run all the applications I want to, but my fiance likes it since she only uses like 3 or 4 apps. Also I would love to have widgets on the home screen like the N97. I hope they implement it in future firmware. Everybody says Symbian is old and hard to use. My fiance likes Symbian and basically learned it within a few hours of playing with it. Google Android is nice, and i love competition. Hoping Symbian^3 will close that gap that Symbian^1 is missing.

OK, sounds great. X6 is the only Nokia Phone I didn't played with. Which version of X6 do you have: X6, or X6-16GB, or X6-8GB? From what I have heard, only X6-16GB has US (AT&T) 3/3.5G. So, I am assuming you are using a X6-16GB US version, right?

Where dd you buy it, and how much did you pay? I will try to get one once you post a response. Thanks.

ovi maps made my phone reboot until i updated it and turned off wifi in the options. now ovi maps works fine. it hangs up every once in awhile, but like a second. it rarely lags, and i am not worried it will ever get to the point where i stress about it. the screen works great. i wish there was an option to adjust kinetic scrolling in the browsers to make it go faster. sometimes i come back to a webpage that is very long and i want to finish what i was reading at the bottom and it just sucks having to flick your screen over and over. other than scrolling in the browsers, the kinetic works fine in the music player. that's how it needs to be in the browser.

great phone. definitely worth $300.

@Jonty, screen response is fine and I have found the X6 to be a stable phone with only the occasional freeze or reboot.

I disagree slightly with the points about reception though, when your not holding the X6 its fine but when I pick mine up I find it will often drop many bars then lose the signal when held in portrait mode, this is very frustrating. Wifi reception isn't great in my opinion, similar to the N95 8gb but much worse than the N79 which will show 30-50% whilst the X6 in the same location won't pick up a wifi signal at all. Nokia couldn't have placed the wifi antenna in a worse position (bottom left) where the hand blocks the signal. Gps signal is very good though and Bluetooth seems fine. The screen is nice, sharp and bright in all but direct sunlight and the X6 has a pair of very decent speakers if a bit quiet.

Tintin, just out of curiosity: unless you really need a phone now, why would you not just wait for the N8 (and other S^3s) to come out? While the X6 might be the best Nokia out there (I personally prefer my N900 given that I do mostly browsing), the old S60v5 frustrations might just drive you nuts. :)

Pukemon, in case you didn't know and just in case you have it installed, apparently Joikuspot's older versions mess with the wifi in Maps. So you could try installing the latest version of Joikuspot to see if that helps.

ps. Double posting because the edit function is not saving my changes.. anyone else have that problem with this darned new forum layout?

I am waiting for N8, but I am almost certain that N8 will have tons of bugs at release (some will be fixed by firmware upgrade), and perhaps will be a disappointment like N97, E72 etc. It is becoming harder to trust Nokia in these days.

Any update on the relaese date of N8?

3Gs blew chunks with reception. (I had 2 phones just to make sure it wasn't a lemon)

From what I've been reading people are wanting to go back to 3Gs from ip4.

One of my friends will pick the ip4 up this fall (if not before) and I'll give it a try but I am truly not expecting much...

Say, aren't you the SAME guy that decided to run with the Blackberry boys? No, wait, you're the guy that was praising Android one minute, and then creating threads with utterly-silly comments and questions about how to complete simple tasks. You were also the chap that flipped Nokia the bird and decided you'd be going with a different platform, and were quite adamant and forward about it.

Oh, so refreshing to see you here again. I expect 7 new threads about the X6 to pop up, you complain about something and then the cycle starts again.

I used to have 3GS, yes it had reception issue. Hence moved onto N1 for a while. In the past 2 weeks of usage, didn't face single dropped call on the ip4!

If it wasn't for the reception (and fragile glass) I would be trying it out by now. My one friend is an AE for AT&T. Since launch the iPhone has been nothing but a nightmare for him. His inbox (witnessed this first hand on his laptop) is filled with complaints. As soon as he gets caught up, more come down the pipe. Most are about reception and a few are about broken glass.

Before the phone launched he was gonna pick up this model for himself, now that's the last thing he wants to look at. Besides other internal issues, this phone and all the drama is part of the reason why he's floating his resume around. He's been with the company since basically '03-'04 (Cingular days).

Honestly (being totally sincere) I'm glad that the phone is working out for you. Like I said, one of my other friends is expecting to pick it up (he's big on Apple). So I will be using it at some point soon, but I'm not in any hurry to try it out..

Tintin, no update on the release date of the N8 afaik. Most folks seem to talk of either very end of August or sometime in September. And obviously will vary by market. Yes, there will of course be bugs in the N8. How many - hard to say. All I can say that a software tester that works on Nokia phones (not for Nokia directly) said the N8 is way more stable already that the N97 ever was before release. So hopefully it won't be as bad as the N97! :p

If the N900 had dual band for Att and tmobile I would be using it now. I played with it and really like the n900 but with tmobile 3g I can't use it at work. Bummer on nokia not making an att version

Great Viipottaja. Thanks. I am waiting for N8. I will leave nokia if N8 turns out a disappointment like N97 or E72. I hope Nokia improves the html Mail-for-Exchange in N8.
