WTH JAPAN!!!!? My rant on 2009 animes

Well I know this is a little late but ive been "Online" Viewing alot of the newer animes that have come out this year & I must say im Dissapointed. Why You may ask. Its because it seems at least 3 out of 5 of every new series or OVA is fanserivice or has Fanservice Elements in the show. I mean I already knew to stay away from Queens blade, but...well let me just put it this way....

Fanservice Animes/Animes with fanservice elements
Queens Blade
Fight Ippatsu! Juuden-Chan
To-LOVE-Ru
Koihime Mosou
Natsu No Arashi
To Heart2
Kiss on my diety
Saki

& to a small Extent Shanri-la & K-ON! (although both are still pretty good shows)

So my question is What da heck is with all the fanservice, i mean its not even somthing special or taboo anymore & good lord you would think all of Japans men would have died from Extreme NosebleeRAB by now. Seriously I really like anime, but I find the increasing amount of fanservice just sad. Ive already lost nick, disney, CN/AS are slowly dyeing. If anime becomes all fanservice. I'll have nothing left. So c'mon People Some-one Please Tell me WTH!? Is up with japan & Modern animes in general!?

I mean I just miss the days when U said anime people though Massive explosions, Gold haired warriors, & Robots. Instead of "Fantasy Girls" I mean like ive said before I find Fanservice funny when used sparringly & at appropriate times (Like negi's comedy sneeze of Doom) but Seriously is all the fanservice in modern day anime nessecary. I love girls as much as the next guy. But its like they say too much of a good thing, well it makes ya sick (In my case gives me a migrane!)

(On a side-note I'll say it again Give me Balsa, Clare,Rachel or Rukia over these fanservice gals anyday!)

So just wanted to know what other people thought were on the amount of..."Fanservice in modern anime".

Otaku culture changed. I'm not particularly happy about it either but that's the way it is. It's the easiest way to make money right now even if the shows are forgettable and just a fad. I'm a big mecha fan and I miss the real romance series myself which have also been replaced with the fanservice shows and I'm not too happy about everyother ecchi show being borderline lolicon but that's just the way things are now unfortunately. I firmly beleive it's just a short term fix and it's not going to save the industry though.

I hope its short term, cause i'd love to see the return of quality action Like Champloo & mech shows like gundam as well as more mystery/espionage series in the same vain as conan or lupin.

I mean overall I know it should,nt bother me. & people can say no ones forcing you to watch the show. I know that but when I get online & am watching Previews for newer series & find out the majority of them are or contain a decent amount of fanservice. I admit i'm somewhat dissapointed. I mean c'mon japan wheres the Awsome Violence & Random Humor we all know & Love!

Looking at your list I guess you haven't watch Basquash and it "Lunar Bust" . Although I have to admit Basquash! is more than just fanservice these days. What about Valkyria Chronicles? There not that much fanservice in that one.

well I did'nt see anything fanservicey in the OP I watched for basquash, i guess i should try to watch the series, again like I said, im not totally against fanservice (Ecspeically used for the sole purpose of comedy) Its just the rediculious amount in alot of modern anime series that bugs me, its like no matter where i go, it follows one way or another, ya know.

Wait, these types of anime (You posted) are "fanservice"?...Yea, I see them a lot, but it's a fanservice? I always call those anime "stereotypical". Guess I'm wrong. But I do agree with you though.

Er, those aren't all spring 2009 anime. To Heart 2 and To-Love-Ru are 2005 and 2008 respectively. Also, based on the one episode I saw on Crunchyroll, Natu no Arashi didn't seem like a fanservice show. More like irredemably silly.

But look, in contrast to that, anime new in Japan this year that seemingly don't indulge in catering like that include FMA Brotherhood, Phantom, Soten Koro, Guin Saga, Eden of the East, Valkyria Chronicles, Asura Cryin, Pandora Hearts, and Ristorante Paradiso. Not that every non-fanservice anime is necessarily awesome, and I haven't checked up on the buzz for every series this season by a long shot, but you see my point.

The problem that we've been talking about in the sexism & feminism thread is pretty far off from solved, but I disagree that it's gotten obviously worse. In fact, the way things are going, 2009 could be shaping up to be a general improvement on 2008.

Um, Ristorante is FULL of fanservice, just not _male_ oriented fanservice.

I mean, it's about a restaurant in rome full of beautiful bespectacled bachelors who serve you desert.

Now, I haven't seen it, but if it just comes down to there being a lot of hanRABome guys in it that doesn't rise to the level of what I would call a "fanservice anime." Fanservice would be "ah-ha, our shirts are off, behold our manliness!" And it would have to be in context. What I would call fanservice anime are generally shamelessly suggestive at best.

looking at your list, you don't seem to be watching with very discriminating tastes anyway, so it's no wonder a lot of those are crappy. Forget the fanservice problems, most of the shows on your list are generic, lazily written moe-ish crap that could be found in abundance during many an era in anime.

I'm not denying that there has been a downturn in variety these days, but it would be like someone watching Love Hina, Happy Lesson, Tenchi, Lucky Star all in a row and concluding that anime these days is all harem stuff. (While there is a lot of it, obviously if you couldn't tell which show was a harem show and which was not just by looking at them, well, that's what you get.)

It does seem to be getting worse, it seems to be one of the main problems with the anime industry in Japan, nowadays. http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20090304f1.html

Japan makes too many shows aimed at otakus, not enough aimed at the general public. Stuff like Queens Blade are practically porn, you couldn't show that anywhere in America. I doubt anyone in America would want to show any of these otaku aimed shows.

It would be nice to have some hard nurabers in order to make a more objective comparison though, since people always tend to have an idealized image of the past and a pessimistic view of the present, particularly during times of crisis, leaving all the little details aside.

The present, however, is a direct continuation of the recent past. Things may be worse, but they surely didn't change overnight. I do think that goes beyond just the relative amount of fanservice though, which was the main issue raised in this topic, since shows that should generate more mainstream interest still exist but maybe they aren't doing well enough. Why would that be? Are even those shows trying to be too appealing to otaku? Have viewing habits changed? What about overall programming? That sort of thing.

While I haven't seen these shows, I did recently watch some anime that started or ended a few months ago, and BOTH used this really tacky, cheap 3D animation. I hope it won't become a trend.

Theres nothing wrong with fan service...I mean you gotta have some eye candy to keep fans watching.

And most anime these days already have excessive fan service. So that complaint is kind of moot now.

I think most people would rather see pretty live action girls instead and there is a problem with the fan service in Queen's Blade, that borderline porn.

If you have a show that's just fan service, its going to turn off the families, who won't let their kiRAB watch it and won't watch themselves and the 18-35 demo will just want to movies or TV shows with live action fan service instead.

Ok, I'll give you that.

And most anime with that amount of fan service are aimed at adults already so they can do what they want, without having about the ratings.

Well most adults in America will prefer the various live action TV series and movies with fan service, then a cartoon with fan service. So those shows would not do well in America.

Well, you got remeraber most of these series are not made with an American audience in mind.

So they can do whatever they want in the series without having to worry about complaints from Americans.

Yeah but that doesn't help the market here and if you look at the article I posted, it hurts the market in Japan as well. Those shows aren't mature, they are very immature.

If Japan is going to produce cartoons that can't even air on anywhere in America, not even rabroadO, that's going to hurt the American market.

Japan mades to make more shows aimed at a general audience and less aimed at otakus.
