I am 28 years old and 16 weeks 1 day pregnant and I got a call from my OB with a positive test result today for Down Syndrome. After freaking out, I remembered that when I first went in to the doctor for the pregnancy confirmation, I KNEW without a doubt the last day of my menstrual period which I am thinking was July 11. However, when we went in for the first ultrasound, the ultrasound tech asked when my LMP was....I had forgot but I told her I thought the 3rd. Pregnancy brain and two months later, I couldn't really remember. Well, she told me I should be about 9 weeks 6 days but my baby was measuring about 8 weeks 4 days. I didn't think much of it and I figured if I had the LMP date wrong, surely they had it on record when I went in for my first visit and it would get adjusted. Well, now I'm wondering if that 8 days could be a reason for concern. I am scheduled for an ultrasound in a few days with the option of amnioscentesis. The doc office was closed when I remembered that the LMP might be off so I couldn't call and ask. I really just want to try and calm down so I'm hoping someone can help answer my question...and that is....could that 8 days make a huge difference or is there another marker in the blood test that would make it more of a positive. The nurse did tell me that my numbers were high so that was a good sign. I'm not really sure what that means. This all just seems so unreal to me. Of course, I'm coming up with all these questions now that their office is closed. Please help!
Ok, first off your due date could be off those days because most women get pregnant 1-2 weeks after their last period. So the ultrasound measures the baby and gives a gestational age based off of the baby's measurements, not the LMP. I know testing positive freaked you out but please remember that testing positive for down syndrome doesn't necessarily mean your baby has down syndrome. The blood test just detects whether or not you are a carrier for the gene. Since your test was positive, it means you're a carrier of the gene. The only way to know for sure if the baby has down syndrome is to have an amniocentesis performed. That is the most accurate way to know. 8 days isn't going to make a difference in the blood test nor is it going to make a difference as to whether or not your baby will have down syndrome. That's up to the Higher powers, unfortunately. But no matter what, I know you'll be a good mommy to that baby because it's your baby! Good luck and I hope all goes well
