XXX,
These three poems are fantastic choices! Read them over and over again and it will be apparent that what is being shared by each author remains somewhat elusive. I cannot find a copy of Dickinson's poem, but I read a few comments about it, so I think I get the idea. Each poem seems to be in some way related to isolation. Emily Dickinson was a bit of a hermit and spent a great deal of time thinking about her isolation and lonliness. Carolyn Davies, in her love poem, speaks about walls and protection that only a loved one can provide. Again, that separation of US and OTHERS. Ezra Pounds' "Jewel Stairs" strikes me more of an analysis of Li Po's poem than her own, but she points out certain critical factors that indicate an isolated, desperately waiting court lady. There is a curtain there, a barrier through which she passes waiting, waiting...
If it were my paper, I would begin the introduction talking about the word ISOLATION. Discuss it in all of its possible meanings, forms, with examples used in many sentences. End with a thesis statement something like: No matter which shade of isolation a reader considers, I will now compare the three poems of........
and the reader will begin to see how critical the term of ISOLATION is to each of the pieces of literature.
Then a paragragh comparing settings, contexts, time periods, word usage, use of similes, metaphors, or whatever else.
Then new paragraph to discuss the fine shades of differences in settings, time periods, word usage, and whatever else.
Then a conclusion drawing together your main points again, and then THIS will be a very interesting paper to read!
Remember that the ideas are YOURS backed up by YOUR interpretation of certain lines (quote them as you discuss them). The purpose of this type of analysis is not to be right or wrong (because with poetry this is not clear!) but to provide an interesting analysis of how YOU see things and WHY you see them that way.
Good luck! I know your paper will be excellent!
