Writing a negation of a statement?

I want to write a negation of a statement. I know that since p---->q is equivalent to p ^ ~q, I want to write a conjunction in words. A conjunction is true only when both statements are true. The statement I have is:

A man will die if he is careless.

I consider "A man will die" to be p, if to be --------> and "he is careless" to be q.

Thus the equivalent negation should be "A man will die and he is not careless." which isn't making a whole lot of sense. Can someone help?
