Wrist and Ankle Weights

There are several posts stating that using wrist and ankle weights are "bad for your joints" while walking. But these are stated as a matter of opinion. Is there any objective scientific evidence that this is the case, other than simple personal opinion? I would like to start with light weights and gradually like to increase them. I am trying to increase my leg strength for rough walking thru brush while upland hunting.
