Wouldn't plug-in electric cars actually be worse for the environment?

Than gas powered cars? I always hear so much about electric cars...like they could "save the planet" and stuff. But since coal is much dirtier than oil, wouldn't plug-in electric cars actually make things worse?

I was thinking the same thing. But maybe we can supplement the recharging with solar panels on the car.

they feel that the coal stack could be filtered electrostatically and that the sum of the emissions from that are less than the cars, especially since the cars are in congested cities right next to people and the power plants tend to be tucked away a bit.

hmmmmmm but the same group of people that talk about electric cars are the same people that want to get rid of coal power. Wind, Solar, Hydroelectric + Electric cars= Healthier enviorment.

Coal+Electric cars= No change
Coal+Gas cars= Bad change.

You don't seem to understand the environmental conscious industry. It's not about actually doing what's right for the environment it's about making people feel like they are helping the environment and better than others. It's all about the marketing.

No, because electric motors are more efficient than internal combustion engines. And also because not all electricity is generated by coal. If you want to be really green put up your own windmills and/or solar panels to make zero emission electricity to charge up your electric car.

The planet is not in any danger, we are. It is all a big case of denial going on. Earth day, earth hour. People arent concerned about nature or the planet,, at least not nearly as much as their own survival. They only think and talk about saving the planet because then that means they are safe. They come first, its the same with everyone including me.

Nope, because we don't use coal for electricity.
Usually we use things like water power and nuclear.
Also the gas emissions from cars are horrendous to the environment
