Wouldn't be surprised if they get an Oscar nomination next year.

Toy Story 3 is my favourite film of the year so far. But there's absolutely no chance it will be the frontrunner for Best Picture. Most of the big Oscar contenders haven't even been released yet.

Black Swan is picking up a fair bit of buzz, Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life is as well. Winter's Bone may well get nominated. Inception and Toy Story 3 will both get nominated for best picture, but neither has a hope in hell of winning it.

If you look at the US December cinema releases on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/nowplaying/2010/12 most of them are clearly aimed at oscar (okay Yogi Bear isn't. Probably.) So it is too early to tell.

I don't think either of those two will win best picture. I haven't seen Inception so this opinion is based purely on the trailer, but I'm not sure it will even get nominated. The bits I've seen it seems blatant SFX heavy and they don't tend to get nominated.

It's SFX heavy for a reason it is not like a Michael Bay movie everything you see whether action or SFX are in there for a reason. You'd know if you watch it. Inception deserves to be seriously considered for Best Pic it will no doubt be nom'd. But the academy seem to just ignore sci-fi. Chris Nolan will/should be nom'd for best director and it should win best screenplay (imagine how Inception looks on paper  :D) as well as the majority of tech awarRAB.

Toy Story 3 will win best animated but the academy will think it is unfair to give a film both best pic and best animated so it won't win both plus I doubt it would anyway. IMO I don't think animated fgilms should be allowed in Best film as they already have there catageory.

The best pic will as always go to some drama about some past event or just some well acted drama or an epic like Gladiator or Lord of the Rings.

Best Actor should go to DiCaprio he is one of the/if not the best actor around and his performance in Shutter Island is outstanding. Inception he was good but nothing compared to Shutter Island he should of won for The Departed.

From November to January all the Oscar bait movies will come out and as always they will be the ones that win the big awarRAB.

I hope Nicholas Cage will be nominated for his role in the Bad Lieutenant.

'Inception' could get an Oscar for special effects or best film, but I have a feeling Shutter Island won't get any nominations.

I didn't know that. lol, I only saw it a couple of months ago and thought it was a new release!

After a little research I've found out that the film wasn't even nominated for an Oscar last year, yet it's won a few awarRAB in various other countries including a couple of Best Actor awarRAB for Nicholas Cage....yay!

I haven't seen it because it is SFX heavy. In my experience the more the SFX the less the storyline ans acting performances. if I hear someone talking about the film and they are talking about an action scene or an fight scene as the main talking point then I know it's an don't race to see it film. My preference is SFX that are there but you don't realise it. Smoke from a chimney or a plane flying in the distance. the bigger the SFX the more my brain registers CGI and I find it distracting.
Also it's a Chris Nolan film and I'm not past the sun shines out of his arse stuff from all the Dark Knight fans.
I really struggle when it comes to hype lol

I don't think it will get both awarRAB and have a feeling it cold miss out on one because it will get seperated from the animation catagory.
The not allowed as there is an animated catagory opens up an whole big debate. Should non-english language films also be disallowed for best film as their is an foreign language catagory?
Some people already think there should be more catagories because films get over looked. best comedy, best horror and so forth because the chances of an slasher film getting nominated in anything other than sound of SFX is zero. There are so many genres you can't cover them all.
I don't have a problem with a film getting put in more than one catagory if it's deserved. I see it in the same way as Crufts. you have the best in Catagory and then the supreme champion which is the best of those, which in these awarRAB is the best film.
At times it does seem ridiculous that a film can get nominated for the best film and not gt nomiinated for any of the other main catagories.

I think that will always be the case because it's hard to judge performances when they are animated. Animation is a bit like mask performance. You are trying to bring an performance through with facial expression and in animation that is very very difficult.

this is where it comes down to personal opinion which of course I accept and respect yours. A lot of people rave about Meryl Streep but she does nothing for me at all. I don't get it.
The Academy has it's favourites and the same names pop up regularly. You do wonder if the Academy make a point of watching them just so they can put them up for an nomination.
It's funny how Tom hanks was always up for something and then sudeenly nothing. Is he doing terrible films, become an bad actor or is he out of favour and not one of the chosen few at the moment? They seem to love Judi Dench and Kate Winslett too.
DiCaprio appears to be one of those people so I am expecting him to get nominated although I wouldn't have a clue for which film.

Haven't seen it but i get such an oscar feeling about Julia roberts in Eat prey and love. Or whatever it is

She has won awarRAB for her rom com type movies.

I wouldn't say the academy love Kate winslet because it took her like 12 years to win an oscar after being nominated so many times. If anything, they like Helen Mirren and Meryl streep.

It's not the winning it's getting nominated. Nicholson has been nominated 12 times and won 3.
I would struggle to think of 12 outstanding performances.
Winslet and Dench match Duvall, Caine, De Niro, V Redgrave and M. Smith amongst others for nominations.

You may remember the cheer that went up when Scorsese finally got his. he had only been nominated 5 times before but everyone knew his body of work over 30 years or so deserved one long before that. Probably for Raging Bull.
The same thing happened with composer Randy Newman He finally won after his 19th nomination. It's almost a tradition now having him get an nomination.

There's one guy who does sound editing who has been nominated almost every year and never won. He's the most nominated person without a win. Poor guy!

I'd love to see DiCaprio nominated for Shutter Island (in fact, if it was up to me SI would get a few noms!). That was a great performance, purely because it works the first time, and then it works even better on subsequent viewings.

Really though, I haven't seen a lot released this year that I think deserves an Oscar Nomination. Inception didn't really wow me that much.
