Wouldn't be surprised if they get an Oscar nomination next year.

Ok we about 6 months away from the Academy AwarRAB so can't get caught up in the hype and get swayed by all the speculation and promotions.

Are there any performances, films, costumes, songs, screenplays etc that you wouldn't be surprised if they get an nomination for an Academy Award?

So far I can see these being possibilities of getting the nod.

Best Animation
How to train a dragon
Legend of the Guardians

Best Film
Toy Story 3D

Best Editing
Salt

Best Sound

I'm not sure Toy Story 3 will be nominated for Best Picture, though it's certain to win Best Animation. How to Train Your Dragon was a good film though.

Is Leonardo DiCaprio eligible for his performance in either Inception or Shutter Island? (More likely to be the latter.)

I picked Toy Story 3 for best picture becase of it's immense popularity as well as it being the end of the franchise and the 3D.

In the last few years an animation has crept into the best film category. Avatar (mostly animation/CGI) as well as Up for example.
If any animated film is going to get that slot I think this is the one that they'll put in there.

Don't get me wrong, I think Toy Story 3 was an incredible film, and I know Up was nominated in the Best Picture category. But I'm not sure it'll get the nomination, being the third in a series of films.

Toy Story 3 will be in Best Picture as I'm sure it is still 10 films being nominated and the only ones I can think of getting the nom at the moment are Inception, Toy Story 3 and Shutter Island. If it is 10 films Inception and TS3 will be there. I think Inception will definately win the majority of tech awarRAB and also has a large chance of best pic and best director (although the acadamy don't like Sci-Fi) and also we have to wait for all the Oscar bait movies to come out

Why would it matter that it was the third in a series of films?

The Return of the King was the final part of a trilogy, and won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture & Best Director.

Good point. But I think in general the Academy might be a bit sniffy about sequels and about animated films, so an animated sequel might be given a rough ride.

The sooner people stop thinking of animation as a genre, the better.

Yes it is. As I pointed out in my OP it would mean that any predictions will be free from any rumours or gossip that usually starts picking up late November.

Once those start to materialise it affects people's opinions. For example people were saying Jeff Bridges will/could win the Oscar despite the film not opening here in the UK until after or around the night of the ceremony.
This means unless they have seen the film online or got the US DVD or BR their being influenced by speculation.

I also made a point of saying nominated rather than say win. You're picking one of multiple spots rather than one single one. I think there is more chance of people knowing the kind of thing that may get nominated based on history.

That will never happen. In the same way they won't scrap an foreign language award. now you and I know that a film is a film regardless of what language it's in, but they have to have this award to stop people saying that XXX wasn't nominated because it's in French, Japanese or whatever.

I am waiting for them to create an 3D film category next. Is one needed? Nope. Does it seperate the film from being seen as an film in it's own right and not as a being something built on and around an CGI process or film technique? Yes. Despite this I can still see it happening especially once 2D animation can't get a look in for an award because of preference for 3D.

Going by reviews for the film, Natalie Portman could be nominated for Best Actress for her role in Black Swan. Inception will no doubt get into the Best Film nominations, especially with the increase of nominations in that catagory now.

None of the films which are serious award contenders have been released! We won't see these movies in the UK for months so i'll reiterate - way too early for this thread!!!

The Hurt Locker was released on August 28th 2009 in the UK, so it's not too early to talk about Oscar worthy films at all.

Just 'cause the studios push their big hopes out a week before the ceremony to capitalise on the buzz doesn't mean the voters will recognize their efforts.

Personally I wouldn't have Shutter Island as even close to Oscar Worthy.

Inception should be in with shouts for Screenplay and Director as well as a lot of technical awarRAB, I would like to see Kick Ass get a screenplay nod, but that'll never happen as that film has made Hollywood producers look very silly indeed!

Toy Story 3 WILL be the favourite to win Best Picture, for the same reason that Return of the King won it despite Two Towers being a better film the previous year.

It's likely the Acting awarRAB will come from films released in the build-up, but I'm liking the buzz around Black Swan, Aronovsky and Natalie Portman sounRAB like a great match-up.

Meryl Streep will get a best actress nod; it's Academy law:D

seriously, I have read about a young American actress called Jennifer Lawrence, who is getting rave reviews for her role in a low-budget film called Winter's Bone...she could get a best actress nomination

Toy Story 3 is certainly going to win best animation, and may have a shot at best picture - though the Academy may kinda award the Trilogy as a whole (just like they did when Return of the King won 11 Oscars).
Dont get me wrong TS3 was a superb film but if it wins best animation (which its certain to IMO) it may not win BP
Then again if HTTYD (which was good) wins BA TS3 has more chance of BP.

Firstly I disagree that Two Towers was better.

Toy Story 3 will win the oscar for best animation and it will probably be one of the ten Best Picture nominations but favourite for Best Picture overall? I seriously doubt it. The category for Best Animation has removed any chance that an animated film has to be named Best Picture overall.

And Lord of the Rings and Toy Story are not comparable. Lord of the Rings was one film chopped up into three chunks and the academy waited for all three chunks to be released before it was properly rewarded by them. Toy Story 3 is simply the second sequel to Toy Story. Return of the King is not Lord of the Rings 3.
