Would you use a Nokia smart-phone if it lacked Symbian?

Whoops, I made a new thread with the same article. Mods, can you delete/merge my thread.

And yes, I'd be MORE than happy to use Nokia hardware with a different OS.

I bought the N8 for its combination of hardware and software features, not for Symbian. I happen to like Symbian, but it's not a necessity. There's nothing on the market that I know of like the N8, but if there were I would (have) consider(ed) it.

On the other hand, I won't buy a feature-deficient phone simply because it runs operating system X.

I would buy a Nokia phone as long as it did not have Android. I like Symbian but I would be ok with WP7, MeeGo, WebOS or anything else. I have attended more than a few security conferences and Android makes the headlines there for all the wrong reasons...

I voted "Not Sure" because I'm very interested in a Meego phone, but after hearing Elop's Apple comment that doesn't sound too encouraging.

I'm hoping that this isn't a rallying cry to get support for WM7, nor would I be happy about a WM7 Nokia device.

I would much rather see them going the Symbian/Meego route or absolute worst case scenario running Android.

Let's see if Nokia makes any goofy "official" announcements in the next couple of days before rushing to judgment...

This is a hard call, as i love the Hardware, but for myself i also really like Symbian, so without MeeGo or Symbian...i dunno i mean i guess if they were just rolling out hardware with WP7 or Android and i really had no choice anymore then those or an Iphone, i guess i would prolly be more likely to buy a Nokia with Android or WP7....God i really hope that doesn't happen. Although to be honest if it does i may just wait and see what Palm brings out for Web OS as i feel its prolly the most solid OS aside from Symbian/MeeGo. So i guess we'll see.

Unfortunately, if they would adopt another 'ecosystem,' 1 and 2 will probably never happen (those would be my first two choices as well).

Eh, it probably should have been, but considering this is the S60 forum, I tried to limit it.

I used buy Nokia for their hardware capabilities, Camera/Video, Music, stereo speakers etc., So would buy certainly should they decide to go with WP7 or Andriod. But It would tough for Nokia to beat Samsung.. as they are already producing amazing phones with those OS.

There's nothing amazing about an expensive, cheap-feeling, plasticy POS with a broken GSP (Galaxy S series, ALL of them).

I'm interested in MeeGo and would certainly entertain a Nokia device on another OS except for WP7. If Nokia goes the path of WP7 I'd never own another one.

+1 *sigh* That's an understatement.

3 Dead Galaxy phones on my end, plus the threads about them dying (which match my experience over on XDA), and no support from Samsung.

Some of you guys need to spend some time with a Galaxy S to really appreciate other phones...

You basically have that with the HTC Desire (minus the Camera and Better GPS)

You get Android 2.2 with all the trimmings, but you also get a phone that drops calls EVERYWHERE, which ended up being my deal breaker...

Same here, if they would use WP7 only then I would definitely abandon Nokia. MS is horrible, the only reason they are still in business is their OS and Office suite monopoly on PCs. Of course I run win 7 on my home PC and laptop but that is because I need to work from home quite often.
I also say this as someone who was at one time a so called MS MVP for Excel and I have done consulting work helping to develop certification standards for Excel 2007 as well.

Android no, WP7 yes. WP7 has such stringent requirements that Nokia would really only be able to make a different model for different frequency bands, and since they're going for penta-band HSPA even that wouldn't be necessary. The biggest problem with Nokia phones for years is they've held out on features, so to get the best Nokia you actually have to buy 3. I remember mono-audio only on the E62, while Xenon flash was only on the N82. We'd probably be hoping a bit too much for a Xenon flash Nokia WP7 device, but at least everything else would be included.

Nokia really wouldn't have to put all that much effort into it either - just do it as a side project, refresh it 1x per year and they'd be able to draw some solid revenue.

Ideally they'd also consolidated their Symbian line, so you can actually get a device with 12MP camera, Xenon flash, QWERTY keyboard, quality stereo speakers, and every other good feature any Nokia device has.

I'm only willing to buy Symbian if it's really cheap. I wouldn't pay money for an N8, but I was willing to buy a 5230 because of how cheap it was, and it's even better, coming close to $100, now.

Android has major fragmentation problems, it's rather like Windows Mobile used to be, with updates being uncertain. Given how Nokia treated Symbian, I'm sure they'd screw Android up badly.

It's not a very good smartphone OS. Multitasking is pretty important, and their implementation is weak. Besides, it's so easy to get an iPod touch - much more convenient to use that and a different smartphone with a WiFi hotspot app.

Great idea, why Nokia didn't buy Palm I have no clue, but webOS on Nokia hardware would kick ***. If HP were willing to work with them, it would be incredibly sweet. Particularly if Nokia leaves the hardware open to install MeeGo at a later date as well.

Sure, it's worth considering. It'd be the best hardware implementation of WP7.

Yeah, bottom of my list too. Android just isn't that appealing (although I'd certainly go for it on the PSP2 if Sony decides to go that direction).
