Would you rather read a book with or without character death?

Do you think main characters dying off in novels is just a sign of a sadistic author, or do you think it's a good resolution in some cases?
Would it be too much to have a character die at the end of a dystopian short story? Society is already crap, and everybody hates each other. I'm hoping that I'm not playing the role of a sadistic author by killing off the main character, but to me it seems a little bit of a mercy for her to die anyways. Plus, I promise it's relevant to the plot!

It makes no difference to me which characters die, as long as the story is well written and there's a good reason for the events in the storyline.

Answer mine? Please & thank you.
