Would you let your children watch this movie?

Yes. It was one of my favourites as a child and was beautifully drawn, although I cried my eyes out at parts of it. Certainly taught me a few things about human nature, albeit through the guise of rabbits! Anyway, it's nowhere near as nasty as the book ;)

Can I just ask why you wanted to know? Would you?

Hey :)

The reason I ask is because I was shown this film as a child, and it frightened me :) It must be some 10 years ago now since I have seen it, so what I have done is oredered myself a copy off the internet  lol

What is the book like then? :) I think I am gonna have trouble watching the movie again in a few days lol

its odd you should post this-"watership down" randomly terrifies me-there is something incredibly sinister about it-especially the prologue at the start with the blood coming over the field-i had the film when i was a kid and i used to watch horror films and films like "taxi driver" when i was about 7 and none of them bothered me at all-but "watership down" scared the bejesus out of me-i watched it earlier this year and i was on edge all the way through.weird.when i met my sister in law for the first time a few years ago she told me that she felt exactly the same way! so no i probably wouldnt let my kiRAB watch it

When I was young I used to watch movies like "A Nightmare On Elm St" with Freddie an all, but there was someting about "Watership Down". I think it is because of the way it is layed out, and the texture of it. So in a few days it's gonna be interesting to watch it again, to see my reaction to it :S

It's really strange because I can watch anything now, and not be put off by it, you may all laugh lol, but it's true

There is something definatly about this Watership Down that is off putting

I have never seen it, but remember years ago when it was shown on TV lots of kiRAB in tears in the playground about it. Their reaction made me never watch it!

Sorry, PC troubles so am only able to reply now. The book is much longer than the film and goes into much more detail about the rabbit "society" and structure, particularly the "military" society ruled by General Woundwort. I guess it's the same sort of idea as Animal Farm - using animals (in this case rabbits, birRAB etc) to portray social behaviour in humans. It's well worth a read, but may not be what you were expecting, as some of it is quite graphic and did give me nightmares. If you're interested in that sort of thing, another good book is Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams (this one uses cats). Sorry to go off topic slightly.

In retrospect, I can see exactly why you're asking if we would let children watch it - thinking back it is a strange theme for a children's film, as it's definitely an adult's book (unless the marketing at the time was wrong!) Let us know what you think when you watch the film again (I may have to do the same as I'm intrigued as to how I'll react to it now at the grand old age of 31!)

You're very welcome :)

I would imagine that the books are more or less the same - it's probably just an amended intro or something similar. My copy is a battered old one from the early 80's and around 480 - 496 pages sounRAB about right. I hope you enjoy it - it's a very clever allegory.

I loved Watership Down (the film) as a child although it did make me cry (and I still well up when I hear Bright Eyes sometimes). I didn't get round to reading the book until a few years ago, but I agree that it's much darker than the film and definately an adult book rather than a kiRAB book.

I bought the dvd a while back and it's interesting to see it from my point of view now compared to how I remember it as a child, you certainly read more into it!

Oh, and to the original question, yes I would let my kiRAB watch it. :)

Hi cooltv - just wondered if you've watched Watership Down again yet, and if you have, if it had the same impression on you again this time. I've been tempted to get another copy myself after your thread, but the reviews on Amazon regarding the DVD quality aren't good, so also wondered if you think it's worth replacing my old worn out video with a DVD?

BTW, what did you think of The Plague Dogs too?

Hi,

I have been having PC troubles so not been able to read the posts recently.

I have now got Watership Down and The Plague Dogs on DVD from Play.com, and these are the updates :)

I have started watching Watership Down, firstly the DVD qaulity of the film is not that bad for a 1978 film. I have watched it to chapter 4 of the DVD, where the rabbits discover a different warren. I have not watched any more yet as I know after this chapter come the bits that I don't like. As soon as I watched it at the start again, there is a bit where the feild fills with blood, and the small rabbit (forget his name) goes on about this bad danger. Them sort of bits where it goes dark with the black rabbits and blood, are the bits the freaks me out. I am hoping to watch the film all the way through before the new year. I keep telling myself, IT'S ONLY A FILM, IT'S NOT REAL :D hehe

As for The Plague Dogs, again I have watched upto chapter 8 of this DVD. This film is dark, and sort of the same to Watership Down but it's dogs instead of rabbits.
Again I hope to see this film through before the new year. :)

There seems to be something about these 2 films by Richard Adams that gets inside of me. I guess we all have films that we like, and some we find hard to view. I don't think there is ANYONE out there that can say they have liked every film that they have watched.

Hi cooltv - thanks very much for responding and giving your views re the film quality, and your reaction so far; much appreciated. :)

Think I might dig the book out and give it another read, and then try the DVD again. I've always avoided The Plague Dogs as it sounded really nasty :o but might try that one too. Hope your PC problems are ok now, and have a good Christmas (if you celebrate it - happy holidays if you don't) :)

I saw watership down and cub scout camp when i was a nipper, it did disturb me a little, especially the rabbit suffocation scenes

Its a marvelous movie, full of pathos and death, if your kiRAB are the sensitive type, i would think twice though

Ive no idea what certification it has these days

Yes, show it.

I watched it all the time, though its quite disturbing. Not for VERY young kiRAB.

I really need to buy the dvd... I was looking at it today.

When i watched watership down as a child i cried EVERY single time.In the end i couldn't watch it anymore because i was soo saddened by it
The funny thing is just last month my boyfriend said he got a pressie for me.........yes you guessed it,a watership down dvd! He said it was on offer.
I told him i was grateful for it, but i'd never be able to watch it again! :o (lol)....even being 25....
