I have 3 ice skaters in the family, Bailee(13), Alexis(4), and Mia(4). My MIL took the girls to ice skating lessons this afternoon, and the coach gave her some information to give to me. He wants Bailee to participate in some teen competition. It will cost a lot of money, but if she does well, there is plenty for her to win.

Would you let your child participate in something like this?

At thirteen she's plenty old enough to make her own decisions. Talk it over with her and discuss the pros and cons, talk about whether she's willing to give up much of her down time and social life for practicing and competition and talk about how these things are going to be paid for if she does want to do it. My belief is that kids should have to help pay for their competitive extras if they want them, not with real money- but doing her chores without complaint. Then ask yourself what sacrifices you are willing to make.
