Emma's speech was met with silence once more, and she turned her head slightly to look at Cole. There was still enough light that she could see a thin, jagged scar running down his face. It spanned from temple to jaw, sometimes disappearing behind his dark curls. Emma wanted to ask how he had gotten it, but before she could open her mouth, Cole turned his grey eyes to her and spoke.
"You give me too much credit," he said. "I'm not quite the hero you make me out to be, Emma."
At this, she tried not to be too pleased that he had finally used her first name, rather than the formal "Miss Whiting." Rather than dwelling on it, however, Emma said, "I think you might be; you're a bit of a modern day Robin Hood, you know."
Cole snorted with derision. "Robber Hood, maybe."
"Well, you do have a band of merry men," Emma continued.
At this, Cole smiled, although Emma noticed it didn't quite reach his eyes. Eyes still on her, he asked, "Does that make you my Maid Marian, then?"
I know it's the middle of a chapter, but based on writing style, tone, interest in the characters, etc, would you continue reading?
