would you blame the media in the rise of anorexia in young girls, do

in a way media does encourage, but at the end of the day, it is down to the person reading it and how they feel. however, the magazines advertise the latest fashions on the skinniest models, so young girls think ahh, thats whats in fashion- looking like you crawled out of a grave.

also the magazines are filled with different diets and exercise regimes- making peoplel feel like they aren't good enough as they are, so try to constantly better themselves by not eating so they can look like a model.

I tdon't think anorexia is about what we all see on the outside- i'm guessing its a way of controlling something that is out of control and is generally triggered by something else... HOWEVER i am researching this at the moment- and anorexia as such is so much more common in areas where the media emphasizes womens weight and the 'perfect body image'- so i think it does make it worse- and if the media didn't exist in the way it does today, it would be a very different story! However- I'm sure a lot of effected young girls (which is probably almost all of them) will look at models and tiny celebrities and think that being as slim as that will make them happy and successful, and i do think that it needs to change, because its impossible not to be effected by it when you're at such a naive time in your life. I also think that so many people say you can't blame the media but i think that we clearly can as its impossible to avoid. As a teenager you go through so much and your mind is like a sponge. Seeing all of these 'perfect images' on a day to day basis that tell you that you will be happy if you look as fabulous as them, is obviously going to have a powerful effect. Because advertising is everywhere we look; on buses, in toilets, magazines, shops, billboards, tv... the list is endless.

Absolutely! Its always skinny pretty girls in the media! U barely see any size 14 and upwards in the media! I think mostly america are to blame for this because they are still image-obsessed and its horrid the way some of them would talk to people who are very curvy! xxxxxxxxxxx

yes they are full of diets and diet stories
the BMI is full of fllaws and should be reviewed

western societies have a massive increase in infertility due to lack of nutrition and dieting
this is a bigger problem than obesity

I personally think that although it does have some effect it is not fair to blame the media, i'm 21 and when going through school I never had an issue with my weight, i grew younger so when i was in secondary school i was 5'8 and a size 14, but it was never an issue for me or any of my friends!
