I facebook a friend. He likes to joke around and is a people person. I recently asked him how the economy was treating him and he gave me his opinion on how to survive these crazy times in addition to some facts he dug up on lay-off rates. I then returned the message giving my own opinion of what I think about savings in general.
He wrote back and said, "Wise words from Cecilia. Cecilia the guru. Just joking. =P" Then of course, there was the rest of the message.
I didn't like how he joked about me, so I told him that I was just stating my opinion and that I didn't find jokes made at my expense funny. I told him to keep it to himself.
Then he replied that he didn't mean it as an insult, that he would never be like that on purpose and that things on email sound differently than what is usually intended. He explained that he meant the wise part as a compliment because he thought my opinion was good; then said the guru part was a joke meant to make me smile.
What do you think? I have a good mind to tell him that he missed the point; that since it was indeed meant as a joke, that it was a joke made at my expense therefore offensive. I can't believe he tried to explain it away instead of saying sorry he didn't mean to offend me. No appology whatsoever and he expects me to say sorry I misunderstood his intentions?
Anyway, tell me how you would have taken that one. Don't give me advice or analyze me. Just tell me what YOU would have thought had you been in the situation and what YOU would have written back. I'm not looking to be justified here, just to get a few more points of view 'cause obviously I believe him when he said he wanted to make me smile... it's just the way he did it was not appropriate, in my estimation, and he would not admit it!
