Would you argue that Joab would have been a better leader than David?

Here is all the notes that I've gathered thus far.

Basically for the essay I am writing, I know that Joab and David are foils because Joab is very vengeful throughout the Bible, while David is more forgiving, even when it comes to his enemies.

And I was going to argue that although both of them are flawed because both commit sins, mostly with David that stops him from implementing justice, Joab does not prove to be the better leader because the only example of a good leader during this time was God, and God is forgiving?

I know that God also punishes so I'm a bit torn and I don't know which to actually commit to: arguing that Joab, despite killing and being vengeful, is a good leader or saying no, David is a good leader because he forgives. It's hard. I'm hoping you guys can help me pick a side. And maybe come up with more evidence that would help sway the decision making.

And if I argue that Joab was a good leader, I was going to say how David's sin (Bathsheba ordeal) prevented him from implementing justice because his son, Amnon raped his half sister, Tamar and David was unable to punish him because he had committed a similar sin in his past.

I'm also having trouble defining what was a good leader in the context of the Bible?
